Chipped varnish

There is a small chip on the edge of the butt cap on my playing cue, it appears to be just the varnish, leaving the juma underneath exposed. Is there a quick fix? Someone suggested clear nail polish. I'm afraid that if I leave it exposed I might get damage on the actual edge or it would get bigger.

Use a magnifying glass and a small brush.
If you are sure it is varnish then use varnish to fill in the chip.
If it is a very small chip use gap filling super glue and a tooth pick.
If you can ... over fill slightly and when dry use some 600 grit and then some 1000 grit.
If you have it even finer sand paper use it.
Restore the shine by hand rubbing auto polish over the repair.
That should blend it in and the repair become all but invisible.
