Choosing wood for cuemaking

Here's a real newbie question. When looking at a turning blank for making a cue, what do you look for in the end grain. I have seen pieces where the grain lines run parallel to the sides or the square blank and some where the grain lines run at an angle. What's prefered for cuemaking?

Also, I've really enjoyed the WOW series of threads on different woods. There is a great deal of information on the characteristics of the different wood. How about adding hints on how to pick the best piece?

In general, straight grains running parallel to the length of the turning square. There are many factors for selecting wood, but that is one of the basics.
