Ok, I have been arould the fine world of pool for goin on 2 years. Now the question that has baffled me and Im very curious in learning what it is.

I bought a Mcdermott a couple of weeks ago from Cueaddict.....AWSOME cue.......now, on the shaft it appears as if it was sanded to about 2-1/2 -3" from the joint collar. It real smoothe and the line is straight.......Now was the shaft cleaned or ??????? I jsut dont know

I really do not wanna take any sandpaper lower than 1500grit to this shaft. Now If I want the shaft super slick like it already is. I would bring it to a cuesmith. Exactly what would I ask him to do to it.....Clean it or refinish it. I dont like that dirty greyish-greenish look that the shaft gets after you play with it....

Can some of yall cuesmiths figure out my question and answer it for me......I wanna venture into light cue repair as a hobby and I really need to know these terms....

Thanks

Shafts

Most shafts have a finish on the first 3 to 5 inches from the joint. The rest of the shaft is not finished. Sometimes waxed, but not finished. To keep your shaft clean, use a slightly damp paper towel and wipe down after using it . Then wipe it down with a dry paper towel. When you take it to a repairman, ask him to clean the shaft for you. There are a lot of products out there just for cleaning shafts. I am sure you are going to hear about them real soon. I don't use any sandpaper unless I put it on my lathe. JMHO

SO a damp paper towel be good for starters right now.

The key word is damp, not wet. Then dry with a paper towel. You will see the chalk on the towel rather than your shaft. When I am done playing, I go wash my hands and bring the damp towel and a dry one back with.

Excellent advice from Purdman! I too do not use sandpaper unless it's spinning on the lathe, this will keep your shaft from getting an egg shape rather than round.
