Maybe you guys will help me understand why, instead of jumping on me for asking this. I have never understood why someone would spend high $$ on a cue, and it NEVER sees any "action"...Heck, it rarely even sees the light of day :eek: . Personally, if I'm gonna spend money on a cue, it WILL get played sometime, no doubt about it. Maybe its just me, but I feel I work too hard to "throw away" money on something just to look at it, but some of you must disagree with the money spent issue here cause' I see alot of you doing this from time to time. Are cues getting to be mere pieces of art, instead of fine playing "tools"??? My other ? is: Say you buy one of these high $$ cues, and though you do what you can to make sure it stays in perfect condition, it still warps somehow. What kind of value does it have then? I'm sure it drops, but to how much? This topic has interested me for a while now, but I haven't seen any threads discussing this before, so I thought I'd ask myself. So c'mon you collectors out there, please gimme some insight as to what the deal is. Thanks in advance, Jeff :D :D
 
Its just like any other collectable I guess. I mean what does anyone really do with something they collect besides look at them? I have a ton of sports memorabilia and all I do with it is frame it and hang it on the wall to be looked at. I'm assuming its the same with cues in that it provides satisfaction to the collector from a collectibles stand point and that it doesn't need to function as a playable cue.

I am not a collector, but it's just like any other hobby...right? You wouldn't collect coins just to spend them on some twinkies. No different than a stamp collector would use part of his collection to mail a letter. It's understanding what you have and the rarity of the item.
 
Dukeboy, I think like you in this situation. I have guns. The one I shoot with 3 times per week cost over 15K, 7 years ago. I also have a high-end cue on order and I will use it several times per week. I enjoy buying and using nice things. I take pride in what I own and I fully intend to use these items or I wouldn't have bought them.

On the other hand some people buy high-end items b/c they just enjoy owning them without actually using them. In both cases I think pride in ownership is a high priority.
 
I know what you mean. I have a gold trigger Browning shotgun I have never fired. I have a Samarai Katana sword that I have never killed anyone with. I have a antique ouija board I have never foretold the future with. I also have a model ship made all in ivory that I have never had in the water.

I think everyone has their own personal reasons for collecting things. Just because certain collectibles CAN be used doesnt mean you have to. I have an old Lionel Train set that I have never set up. I just wanted to have it because I had one as a child. My cues are the same way. I like them. Some I play with. Some I just look at. One cue I have only taken a few shots with. Oh..I have a hockey stick used by Gary Unger (my favorite sports idol as a child) and I have never taken a slap shot with it. I believe 99% of collectors dont USE their collections in the way they were meant to. That usually reduces the value. Most people that dont understand this way of thinking usually are ones that don't collect anything.

the most expensive cues I own dont get much play, however I have hit balls with all of them from time to time except one(just havent made the time), Why did I buy them? because I love the history, art, the mystery of their history intregues me. I did play a 3 hour session with the most expensive cue I paid for(I have cues that are worth more but I paid less for them) the one I paid the most for is a great break cue, it has 4 shafts so 3 are mint.

I dreamed of having some BIG cues when I started pool, when the time came and I could indulge in them I did, and I take them out often and look at them, my health is bad and I cant play everyday so looking at them is second best for now. In my eyes cues are the finest art in the world and since I have been blessed enough to aquire some I did. None of them will ever be sold unless something tragic happens, I have owned some cues almost 20 years. I will be buried in my casket with a cue-just a player cue not a piece of art.

Because I look at them all the time, use them occasionally they are worth every penny, even if I could get 10X what I paid for some cues I wouldnt sell them-only the Szams, the others I'd take the payday. When I die the Szam's are going to be avaliable to the public to see and use(except 1 i'm gonna put in my casket-I'll need a cue in hell ;) ), i havent figured out how but i will, i have along time to figure that one out.

As far as the gay thing goes, i'm cool with it if someone tells me when i meet them and they dont hit on me, I lost a friend once after 2 years he got drunk and hit on me, really hit on me, we never spoke again. I love girls 2 or 3 at a time-I make it a point to do that as often as possible. But girls arnt that important to me, business, hanging woith friends, gym, pool etc is more my thing. I'm not a tail chaser-I wait for them to deliver....and they do.
