cloth suggestions

Hello,

I haven't played pool in about 10 years, but I recently bought a 9' Brunswick Ashbee table with ram's head legs because I enjoyed the game just not the waits in the pool halls, and because I have the room and always wanted a table. http://www.brunswickbilliards.com/brunswick_collection/tables/european/ashbee.html if you're interested. I opted for the standard cloth in burgundy, $$$ being a concern since the table was very expensive (IMHO, maybe not for others).

The cloth is beginning to bug me. It's slow, and nappy. I realize it's new and the dealer said it would take some time to not shed on brushing. I hindsight I should have opted for Simonis cloth or the Brunswick Centennial cloth. What can I do to speed up the table (without changing cloth)? How much would it cost to recloth a table (in general)?

Also, what kind of bumpers are on these tables. It seems to absorb alot and rebounds slow. I have to hit the cue fairly hard to get it to go around the table. Or could that just be the cloth?

Thanks!

someone told me once you could actually "iron" your cloth. not sure how this would work, so you better check on it first.

the only thing i could think of to make the table faster would be to be certain your cueball is clean/polished. draw shots are soooo much easier with a polished cue ball. Aramith makes a cue ball cleaner, i believe.

however, i wouldnt think it would cost too much to have a competent mechanic come in and replace your cloth with simonis.

Iron will speed up play a bit but it they sealed the seams with bees wax it could melt it. For that reason I don't suggest doing that.

Ok it's got fuzz balls, once the cloth is used for a while they will start going away. I don't know, I do know everyone wants a table in the shortest amount of time. For that reason they cut corners. I always say wait an extra month (or whatever) until you can afford good cloth.

I wouldn't condem the rails at this point because of the cloth.

I have a Gandy Big "G", 9ft. They want $530.00 for Simonis 860 including rails. How does that sound to you guys?

sounds about right in the D.C. area.
i got mine from the #1 table mechanic in Indy that works for Jay Orner & Sons last winter, and he charged me $450. 9 foot Gold Crown IV with Simonis 860, including rails. probably going to have it done again after the holiday rush.

I noticed that my simonis slowed after a couple of weeks...the addition of a dehumidifier to the room brought the speed back to the same as it was a hour after it was installed. By the way, the GC III that I have was setup, re-railed with new rubber, re-covered and leveled by the billiard factory for $650.

Thanks for the replies. Can anyone recommend a mechanic in/near San Jose, CA? I'm not going to do it right away, maybe in a year or so, but it's something I will keep in my address book for future reference. It would be a shame to recloth so soon.
