CNC Advice

I am wondering what level of involvement CNC has in your cue making.
I am looking to branch out and buy some new gear. I am thinking I could get started with a 6040 or even a DIY package to do inlay work for butts and forearms. Is a 6040 large enough for other work like tapering or should I stick to doing that on a lathe ? What do you recommend ? Any help is appreciated.

It sounds like to me that you have not started building yet. If this is the case then the CNC machine is not where to start. Now if you want a cnc machine to learn on and then get into cue building that is fine. Too many jump in over their heads and it is money wasted.

If you are hell bent on getting into cue building then get some information. Books and or videos. That is where you want to start. By the way you will not find information on using the cnc for cue building in any books. If you are interested in that then learn CadCam software. Do a search for Mach 3. Go to their web site. Download the user manuals and the software. Learn how to use that before you spend 10-50K on machines and wood.

Good luck, Jim.

Thanks Jim ! I have been mainly doing repair work for about a year ... I have built a few cues mainly for personal use ... I have the Mid America 48" setup with large bore headstock ... Router etc ... I don't do any inlay work currently ... I was planning on entry level CNC work but mainly wondering about the size limitations ... I appreciate your comments !
