cocky bad players: the things they say. Just a story.

A little while ago I went to the pool hall to work on my game, I was doing some drills and a guy wanted to play with me, not for money though. He wanted to play 8 ball. A difficult shot comes up and I call the shot as it was not obvious, he tells me "It's okay you dont have to call shots, you're a good player... JUST LIKE ME. I'll trust you." That sounded kinda odd.
We play and everytime he misses he makes some remark, or some kind of grunt.. We continue, he mentions on occasion, "I know I wouldn't have missed that if it was for money." Every other game we play he switches from his action cue to his players or his 3rd cue which I can't see the name. I mention to him he's got a lot of cues, and he says "it's best to switch when you're off your game like I am now." maybe he was off his game I don't know, at this time we've been playing for half an hour and he has not won a game.
He starts a conversation about how he could concentrate more but he's just shooting casually now. I found this odd because he makes so much fuss about each missed shot. Now he talks about how he's an APA level 5 which means nothing to me cause I don't know anything about APA except they have a 9 ball league at my pool hall. Now he wasn't bad, he could run 4-5 balls in a row. In BCA terms I'd call him a B player but I just didn't see the need for him to tell me how good a player he was or how he normally doesn't miss certain shots.
We play for nearly an hour and he has not won a game, however he beats me in the last game and says "it's about time, well I have to go" Now I just dont get that; I didn't undertand his behavior. It was like he was trying to prove something to me... odd. Well I had to vent, cause it annoyed me, not sure why either. Oh well, forgive me guys sorry to suck up so much forum space.

The pool world is full of nits like that. You should have said "shut your nit ass up and bet it up" . I know a guy like that but he is alot worse. The guy actually believes that he is a solid A player. He talks shit all the time and tries to put peoples games down by comparing them to HIS game. I played in a tournament one time and had not seen the guy in about a year. I ended up winning the tournament and running over everyone because my game had improved alot. He says after the tournament in a serious tone "charlie your games alot stronger now. I used to play better than you but not now." It made me laugh because 2 years ago I was giving the guy the 8 and the breaks. Although he is cocky everyone thinks he is a nit so what he thinks means nothing to me.

It's funny how in almost every thread someone always talks about how they drilled someone or won a tournament. It could be a thread about stainless steel joints and someone will find a way to include "I ended up winning the tournament" or "I drilled him 7-0".

It's just a story I wanted to share. Read/respond if you like. Personally I like reading other people's stories. Didn't know I would end up offending you.

addendum, all his cues had a stainless steel joints ;)

When I was in college, I went on a trip from Gainesville to Chicago to play in the Williards tournament. Along the way up we ended up in Beechmont Billiards in Cincinatti. I matched up with a young player named Tommy and we played about 4 hrs with him beating me in the end out of a set. After we got done I was sitting chatting with Tommy and he says...hey look..now there's the guy you should try to get down with. He points out this middle aged guy who the word was he was some kind of drug dealer (DD) but liked to gamble.

So I end up getting in action with DD and I am playing him giving him the 7 for 30 a game. He was clearly high as a kite and kept doing some very odd things in between running out. He was lighting cigarettes and leaving them burning on the table edge and he would light another cig any time he wanted another drag. At one point there were 4 cigs on the table before I finally started getting hot about it and made him move them.

Anyways, long story short, he had this VERY annoying cocky way to him once he had me stuck. As he would run out he would say to me over and over, " I don't know why you dont just give this to me and save yourself some pain". <fires in the 5> Save yourself some pain boy! <shoots the 6> This could be over right now and you should save yourself some pain! <money ball in time to rack>.

The funny ending to this story is that I actually would have quit him when he had me 270 stuck but he started really making me mad with all this "save yersallf soomme ppaynne" crap and instead of quitting I asked him to jack the bet to 50 and proceeded to bust him. In the end he borrowed money from like 4 people in the house before I rejected an offer to buy his cue and the game ended with him broke.

Man i love those types of guys, who whenever they seem to run into someone who just rolls over them, they end up having the WORST nite of thier life and cant make a ball.

I've had nites like that when i end up practicing with someone who is really good( AA or Open rated) and i just tend to try too hard to make balls, and end up not playing my game.

Now I had a nite like this when i met PERK from AZB a few months back and played some pool with him at his place. I seriously didnt win a single set, and we was just playing for fun, i barely could win a game lol. And i even told him i was playing terrible, because i was kinda nervous.

Perk does play a good game, and i was just kinda intimidated and was trying to just play well and ended up not play for shyt lol. But oh well.

And now i could probably drill him cuz i use a Stainless Steel joint lol, jk

You cuetech is a nit. He always tries to start crap... He is probably the guy you are talking about lol....

If that is you in your Avatar Twilight, you should have given him a flying knee to the head and said.. "If this were a real fight, I would have killed you.." LOL

i love to play with these type of players myself just to hear what they have to say. I had this one player that is awesome and man he has a nyce break and scattered the balls apart and nothing fell, he said sheesh every ball hit every rail and nothing fell, LOL that was funny as hell to me. I love to get advice from players alot too if they are better then me but to see these type of guys giving advice to people too is something i love to see also, like they know everything you are doing is wrong, but is always good to help someone out.

I drilled a guys stainless steel sink, then we smoked a joint.....

no money changed hands...

Yeah that's me, my other passion, Mixed Marial Arts. However I don't want to talk about it much for fear that cuetechasaurus might think I'm bragging. But I gotta say, some martial arts are hard on your joints, especially if you do drills. Maybe I should get my knees replaced with stainless steel joints.
