Compression fit on a piloted joint

No offense Willie..............I used this state as my mailing address for quite some years!
 
I have made some shafts with the piloit type joint for a few of the local guys. They wanted the pilot part to be made of phenolic not brass.
Some liked them some did not see anything special about them.
They do take longer to make if you want the pilot part to fit the joint socket snug and proper ... .005" to small and it is loose as a goose and defeats all the reasons to make one.

Personally, I am a flat face kinda cue maker.
I like the way that joint feels so that is what I like to make.
Unless of course I am paid to do otherwise.:D

Well, I was trying to add some information to this post and give just some of my brief insight about the subject. However, as usual people here can not be civil and always have to be condescending in their responses. I do not usually post nor say much here but I do like to read and learn. But with responses like this I know why people shun away from this site more and more everyday. And this is not really bad just the wrong tone.

?enlightening post is the facts of different materials transmitting the wavelength. Maple and Cocobolo do not have the same density and will not have the same resonance. Not only "That being each substance has a specific grain pattern and how they react to tensile and compressive stresses." Not to mention laminations of wood , phenolic, metal, all have different resonance qualities. Smart man....?
First off, yes you are right different materials have different densities, especially woods? Being you are a cue maker and most of this section is for cue makers, I assumed most knew that fact? Sorry that was my first mistake. Also, materials do not that the same resonance? This is true but I was just addressing the compressive state of a material and the transfer of wavelengths through a compressed material? I understand I do not know nearly as much as so many great cue makers who make their lively hood doing and designing such pieces of art and function. I am neither a machinist nor metallurgist but I was just trying to participate and have fun at the same time but that is almost impossible on this site. Thanks for the education and I wish all of you the best at your trade.

Schon is one of the few that still has a 'compression-fit' pilot. In machining terms it's referred to as an interference-fit. The area in the ss jnt. collar where the pilot sits when connected has an id of .530". When I build Pred. shafts for Schons I bring the pilot in @ .531". If this were steel, this would be intolerable but we're talking phenolic here. These shafts sell because Schon owners appreciate that the Pred. shaft has the same fit-up feel as their orig. shaft.
