My last post included a rant regarding my recreational 9-ball league, in which a couple players were not adhering to the "unwritten" rules. I have finished venting on this subject, I thought I would update anyone that might be interested in the outcome.
The player most associated with the infractions has quit, which is unfortunate. Although many in the league were getting frustrated, a simple adjustment in play would have sufficed, but no one wants to see a fellow pool player quit the game....hopefully they will return and they will be welcomed back.
I actually played another one of the players with numerous complaints lodged against them on Sunday of last week. The player is what I would consider a weaker player, although for most in our league I believe he is a little more than they can handle. In our league we play the player closest in ability in two rounds. The first is usually the last games of round one and the second time is usually the last games of round 4.
By the time our games rolled around in round one, our teams had split down the middle. I was a little off and was rattling balls like crazy, especially in the corners. My shape was dead on, but on at least 6 shots (yes, I missed that much in a game!!) I accidentally hooked my opponent. If looks could kill, I dead several times over. Comments were thrown my way each time and my opponent was positive I was playing that way on purpose, regardless of the shape I would have had for the next shot. We ultimately split the first round.
Round 2 and 3 came with comments each time I shot...to take it easy on the lower ranked players on his team. As I usually play...I took unusual shots to equalize the table, but if I sunk it...more comments were hurlded my way. Round 2 was another split and round 3 saw my opponents team come out on top.
Round 3...the deciding round and captain against captain. By now I had heard enough comments from the peanut gallery and I am sure he heard me say that I was tired of it and would take him in straight games. I did, and boy was he pissed, but at that point I didn't care. Anything less than straight games would be a major disappointment.
I am beginning to come to the realization that I am no longer playing league for fun, but as a way to pass the time until I get to play some real pool after league play ends. I am highly competitive by nature and don't really like lowering my game. My mental game is completely abscent, which greatly affects my ability to play at a higher level.
I hate losing to players that I believe to be lower calibre, but am made to feel guilty when I beat them by other players. Guess I have something to work on....thanks for reading....
