anyone got a written guideline?
As i buy and sell and read others 'issues' i ponder... i used to collect baseball cards and they had a 'guideline' rating system so we all could approximately tell what condition it was- featherd corner, bent corner, misaligned border etc... then assign a value based on a minty new card...

if noone has one- maybe we should come up with one.... i'll even put it on a word file or something...

ideas? or point me in the right direction?

i was thinking start with a 100 point rating and assign a point value to each 'flaw' that could commonly occur and come up with a condition rating by subtracting....

all ponders are welcome or am i barking up a wrong tree here... Yes i know there will be cheaters and differences but it's a guideline... now we send baseball cards to 'official rating companies' and get them back with a rating and that's how values are rated of cards... but we started with just a guideline...

3rd Blue Book by Brad Simpson use below definition:

  • 100%: Virtually new condition, straight butt and shafts, no nicks, dings, or scratches, possibly never chalked.
  • 98%: Almost no observable wear, perhaps extremely light finish scratching, near 100% except for chalk on tip, ferrules,
and shaft. It is slightly lower than mint (in other words, it's been played).
  • 95%: Very light observable wear, has seen a fair amount of use, perhaps light finish scratching, close to mint.
  • 90%: Straight and playable, but has light wear on the shafts, finish, wrap, ferrules, and tips from plenty of play.
  • 70%: Noticeable wear on most areas, possible warping on shafts, chips and dings, possible cracks in non-vital areas,
shows plenty of use, still very playable but may make noise, possibly ready for repair or a restoration.
Note: For lesser condition cues, price is based on the value of a mint restored example, minus the time and cost to restore a cue to this condition. (Refer to repairs for this determination.)

i use this as a guideline BUT with these mods...

  • 100%: Virtually new condition, straight butt and shafts, no nicks, dings, or scratches, possibly never chalked.
  • 95%: Almost no observable wear, perhaps extremely light finish scratching, near 100% except for chalk on tip, ferrules,
and shaft. It is slightly lower than mint (in other words, it's been played).
  • 90%: Very light observable wear, has seen a fair amount of use, perhaps light finish scratching, close to mint.
  • 80%: Straight and playable, but has light wear on the shafts, finish, wrap, ferrules, and tips from plenty of play.

  • 70%: Well used with normal wear and tear, BUT could use a refinish with no other work needed to make it mint. NO warps (some taper wobble ok), noises or cracks....

  • 50%: Noticeable wear on most areas, possible warping on shafts, chips and dings, possible cracks in non-vital areas,
shows plenty of use, still very playable but may make noise, possibly ready for repair or a restoration.

>>>> i dont think a 70% condition cue should make noise, have cracks or have warped shafts...thats more like a 50%-er to me...:o
