Cross-over close bridge...

Is there any advantage to this type of bridge, why do alot of pros use it?

Since when did people started using it, I saw some matches by Mosconi and his contempories and they were only using the regular close bridge.

I do not have an answer for you on this one but I will say that I do use the bridge myself.
