Cue extensions- why & what length?

I have seen some pros play w/ screw-in extensions at the rear of the cue left in all the time & I have seen some that screw in an extension only on longer shots. Is the purpose of such an extension to add weight & alter the balance of the cue or is it to avoid using a mechanical bridge? Would someone 6"0" playing on an 8-foot table want a 6" or 8" extension if their goal was to use a mechanical bridge less often?

Thanks.

Maybe started as a replacement for the slide on extensions and then some players realized they liked what an extension did for the feel etc. so started using them full time. Like anything else with cues, if you think it helps your game and it's legal, go for it.

I have an Oversized 8ft table and occasionally I come across a shot that I want to shoot from a particular angle. I have a bridge, could utilize it, but it's honestly easier to control my Cueball for shape after just using a slightly longer cue.

I bought a 4" metal joint extention to try.
It added a decent amount of weight at first, so i removed the weight bolt from the bumper and got it back to 20oz. (Still a bit on the heavy side, but totally workable)

I still think my preference would be a screw on butt extention into my regular player, that will be down the road.

I have a aluminum 8" that I use, I do like how it smooths my stroke out, not sure if its the weight or the length responsible. It takes my cue in the 22oz range, so swing a big bat Iol

You’d have to experiment with different size extensions to see which might suit you best. As far as an extension to use for a long reach shots to avoid using the bridge as often, I’d suggest either an 8 or a 12 inch extension.

Keep in mind depending the room and table you are playing on, an extension for all shots could potentially create problems with walls, etc.
