hi i am planning to finish a cue soon and use auto clear coat for the bottom half but towards the top i got told that that is no good as it doesnt slide, what else can i use for the shaft to make it a smooth slide, thanks Joel

Try Chris Hightower or Unique products, they both sell some sought of sealers, I'm sure they work okay. For the final touch, Slip Stic.

Is there anything that is readily available in australia, coz it costs alot to get things shipped over and customs checked over here and if its just for a 40 odd dollar order i would have to pay 50 dollars in customs and shipping on top of that, so anything for finishing the shaft of the cue that slides smoothly and goes well with auto clear coat, Thanks joel

You will want to stop the finish a few inches past the joint.
You can seal the shaft with a number of different products, all of which will wear off eventually if not re-applied. Most players prefer bare wood that has been sealed and sanded.

I'm not a cuemaker but here's my $.02 worth. Look for a sealer called nelsonite (I believe this was origionally an outdoor furniture sealer). After dry, VERY LIGHT sand with 1000grit or finer paper then use carnauba wax(wax on,wax off),buff by stroking the shaft hard a couple of times with something like a t-shirt.Finish only goes a couple of inches past the joint just as Sheldon says.Be careful about what sealer you use, test a small spot and see if it raises the grain.Nelsonite is not exported but if you can contact a custom knifemaker down under he'll probably be able to set you up with something similar(actually called a wood stabilizer).

What you could do is burnish the shaft, using a smooth piece of leather while spinning on the lathe. You could apply Rennaissance wax after.
