I have material and means to work on cues, shafts, etc... but working on my own cues always makes me a little skiddish, I don't like to do it. I'll change my own tips if I have to, I'll clean and wax if I have to, but really I try to avoid it if I can. Recently I asked a local cuemaker to change up the joints on a couple of shafts for me, something I'm capable of doing, but on my own stuff, ehhhh...
Anyways, I took them over to his shop on a Thursday a week or so ago, his dog tried to eat me but that's another story.
He looked at them, gave me a price and I said OK. I got them back on Saturday, no less than 3 phone calls, impeccable work and "if you need anything else, please let me know".
This guy is not lacking for work, but he took time to take care of me and my stuff and in only a couple of days, kept communication lines open though out the process and it's not the first time.
Why do I type this? Recently, I'd guess over this past year or so, there has been a rash of things going wrong with material sent to cuemakers and other service people and the talent pool seems to be getting smaller and smaller. I'm here to tell you that Ernie Martinez does outstanding work. I know we're in the same town and I'm 20 minutes from his shop, but this guy is at the top of the heap and will always have my business whether I need a new cue or need a tip changed or shaft cleaned, if I have a way to get my cues to Ernie and he has the time, he'll always get my work.
I've lived here in Denver all my life and have been aware of Ernie since the late 80's - early 90's and his work at Showcase and I can tell you with great conviction that he's the best, this guy has the nuts.
