Early on, some of the guys used what looks like a shop vac vaccum extension handle with a sock on the end of it.

That's a idea for the vacuum extension. Did they have the sock on the inside of it?
I have been using a mcdermott c series that was my first cue and don't like the tiny screw they use for a extension

Agreed. That 6mm screw is questionable.
The sock. They attached it but I don't know how. I thought it was cool in an old school kind of way.

Yes that is the one Mr Joshua, you would think there should be a few left out there somewhere.
