im looking to buy a cuestick in the 150-300$ range for my first real cuestick. ive had my table for 6 months now and have been playing with a house dufferin stick and a cheap players cue.i dont suck that bad anymore, lol,so id like to play in the weekly tournaments close to here. should i buy a j/b cue and use that until i decide what i want, since im told i'll need one sooner or later,or should i do something else?

Hi,

I would suggest you buy a cue based on this scale as many pro pool books indicate.

Length

57 to 58 1/2 inches 57 for short people 57 1/2 for medium 58 for 6'2" people 58 1/2 very tall.

weight

19 to 20 1/2
19 makes your arm do more of the work and is more controlled
20 medium
20 1/2 allows your cue to do the work because of the weight versus your hand less control!

tip

12 3/4 to 13 1/4
based on size of hands and fingers should make decision

Buy from a local cue maker who will be able to service it

Find one tip you like and stay with that tip what ever you decide. Too often people switch tips and it throughs their game off. CONSISTENCY of hit is important and the tip is crucial USE THE SAME TYPE TIP. they wear out and need changing often.

Do not buy one that is not balanced when put together at 1/3 of the way from the top of the joint. usually that is 2 to 3 inches above the wrap. check for straight shafts and roll and make sure it has maple on the shafts and between the joint and the wrap. I played with some ebony peices and reverse points and the were horrible.

These are just some kind words of advise and good luck on your search.

You should buy a lucasi, That was my first real cue over $100. It hit great and I still have it the wife uses it in league now. I got it on ebay and I got a really good deal seyberts was selling it for like $350 and I got it brand new for $190 with overnight shipping!! Check out ebay you can get some good deals! Check out joerackem he is the guy I got my cue from and he has some good deals. No I am not joerackem!!

lucasi

I can also atest for lucasi, i have a lucasi sneaky pete ( the purple heart on ) and I thoroughly love my cue.. except my tip is getting kind of smooth and I need to reshape it but i don't have the tools to do so right now.. so i dunno... lol just thinking through my fingers.. but lucasi is definitly not a bad place to start!

I used to use a Lucasi 2000 jump/break cue but had some problems with it. The bottom pin where the butt screws into the middle section started gradually sliding out. Every time after I broke that section would come loose. I finally got tired of it and bought a Cuetec. The Cuetec breaks better and I can jump with it easier too.
Just my opinion.

If it was me I'd buy a joss cue. Only about a thousand designs from them that fall into your price range. Look on ebay.

Great hitting cues, under valued on ebay currently. Personally think they are a better cue than lucasi's. Just my humble opinion of course...

This is very good advice. (the boy is finally learnin') :p :D

so ive noticed that cues come with a pro taper between 9- 15in. i played with the cutec that has a 15 in taper, but a joss cue has a 9-10 in taper, what makes it different?

The 9-10" taper would be stiffer than a 15", but i'm not sure about the whole fiberglass part, it may stiffen it up a little bit.
I haven't a clue as to how a cuetec plays.
I haven't been that drunk yet.

and i don't think a cue should be disliked because of a bad joint... many different things affect a cues performance... don't get me wrong.. i'm sure it has an effect.. *shrug*

The fiberglass aspect does make the hit pretty stiff. The Cuetec is my jump/break cue. I wouldn't recommend that the guy use a Cuetec as his playing cue 'cause I know I wouldn't. However it breaks and jumps really well. And for the guy that said a bad joint didn't make a cue bad, wtf?
