Cue Weight for a small lady

I'm going to be getting my wife a new cue soon and I'm not sure what weight it should be.

She is only 5 ft and just learning the game. Currently she is using my old cue which is about 20 oz but I'm thinking more along the lines of around 18 oz.

Any suggestions?

Cue weight has more to do with cue feel than the size of the player. My strongly held opinion is that she should stick with a 57 or 58 inch cue at 19 1/4 oz or there about. However shaft diameter is purely a matter of what she is comfortable with.

Others may have different opinions, but like I said I feel strongly about this.

You might also look to the ladies tour and what some of the smaller champions play. That will give you real world data from the best.
 
My wife is 5ft even and plays with a 20oz. I think it is too heavy (but I play with a 18.5oz cue) Best bet is to have her hit with different weight cues and she will find out what she is comfortable with.
 
I don't think any weight within the normal spectrum (17-21ish) is too light or heavy for anyone. I know giant guys that play with a 17 and little dudes that play with a club.

It all depends on feel. The "normal" weight is probably 19-19.5. Get her something that is around 19.5 with a weight bolt. If she doesn't like it, she can take the bolt out and make it lighter.
 
In some ways a heavier cue can benefit a new player in that the cue can do more of the work & minimize a small portion of the elbow inaccuracy in an uneducated stroke. It also can provide a bit of power without all the added mechanical considerations. Most newer women players seem to suffer from a lack of power to shoot across the table - even though it's well within their strength, of course. More a matter of being tentative.
Provided she can control her arm so as not to be slamming the balls around, this may be worth a thought.
