Pocket Facing can crack/chip over time but they really don't wear as they are under the felt.
I am not sure about the "add for pro pockets" you mentioned that adds something on top of the existing cloth...this sounds like a big No Go to me.
The correct way to tighten pockets is to have the wood sub rails extended, replace the rubber rails with new rubber, then cut to met angle requirements.
In this case one would install standard pocket facings, the thinner the better:
This is not cheap but it's the correct way...

That said, if you simply want to tighten your pockets by adding thickness to the pocket facings, you could use 1/4" pocket facing like these.
Remove the existing facings and add these before recovering the rails.
These are playable; however, you can expect a somewhat different hit/bounce when someone drives a ball into the thicker facings but they do make the pockets tighter and more challenging.

In short, the right way (albeit expensive) is to replace the rubber and install longer rubber on extended wood rails.
The next best (and cheap) thing is to replace the pocket facings with thicker facings.
As a last resort if the current pockets are huge is to stack pocket facings; however, I do not recommend this as you can really affecting the playability.
Depending on the type/brand of table you have; I have seen complete new rail sets available at reasonable prices. Some of these are already covered in cloth prior to shipping.
