Custom Cue / Woods?

I am planning to have a cue made for my wife by a local cue maker and was hoping to get some suggestions. I would like to have the cue maker use specific types of wood that I suggest. She generally likes a heavier cue somewhere around 20oz and would like something fairly simple in design. Nothing too fancy.

What woods do you prefer? I am trying to stay with colors like balck grey, deep reds, brown wood tones or possibly even purple.

Any comments on durability, feel or hit?

I love Cocobolo so I had mine made with that. Mexican cocobolo has darker swirls that stand out more. I also like contrasts with curly maple or tiger maple to stand out points and such. Wish I would have got a curly maple grip on my new cue...maybe down the road.
Kingswood has a purplish tint to it and is also swirley. Makers can dye to any color, but I tend to like more natural lights and dark browns in my cue.

For a heavy cue, Cocobolo and Ebony are good choicesbecause they are naturally heavy woods, shouldn't need a weight bolt if made right.

I love th elook of a solid ebony forearm with 4 cocobolo points. And having the solid ebony up front gives you a great forward ballance.

CCC21,

If the cuemaker builds the custom cue the right way, Buddha Jones is correct. No weight bolt, will be needed.

Woods are your choice. Ebony goes well with purpleheart, as coco-bola goes well with ebony.

Coco-bola hits a little crisper than ebony, because it's a little dencer [spelling] than ebony and also heavier.

$.02 Worth...

I will have to vote for ebony forearm with bocote points. Ebony because your wife likes the darker colors, bocote because of the dark, slow swirls- it really complements the balck of the ebony.

I also vote no stain!

I agree on the bocote and ebony. Here is a great looking Coker so you can see what it looks like.

Best regards,
Dave

Yeah pink ivory is nice. My maker got the woods in for his personal playing cue. A huge pice of pink ivory for the forearm and buttcap, with ivory points and ebony points going both up and down. Ringwork with little spliced points of ivory above and below the wrap. Should turn out pretty nice.

Or cocobola or bubinga.:)

Thanks for all the help!

I think I like the idea of Ebony and Cocobolo, maybe even with a litte Purpleheart.

Ebony front with pink ivory handle would sure look cool albeit expensive.
