Hi,

I'm just wondering if anyone here has ever asked a cuemaker to use your own ivory (joint, butt cap, ferrules) on a cue you wanted built? How did they respond? If they agreed to use your ivory, were you charged simply for labor, or were there extra costs?

Have any of the cuemakers posting here had a customer make such a request? Do you find these requests to be inappropriate? If you were to agree to use a customer's ivory, how would they be charged?

The first red flag I would want to let the customer know is that if the Ivory cracks while boring it is their loss. Where as if my own Ivory cracks while boring it or turning I would replace it at my expense. You never know where the customers ivory came from and how dry it is. You could expect to save some on a ivory cue by providing your own ivory, but don't expect them to install the ivory joint and butt plate for the same price they would put phenolic on for. I would guess most cuemakers would meet you in the middle somewhere. Just for example let's say an Ivory Joint and Butt plate ads $500 to the normal price of a cue. If you provide the Ivory you might expect them to only charge a couple hundred extra. These are just thoughts thrown off the top of my head, but that is what I think I would want to charge for doing it provided the ivory you provided is already turned round.

I have 2 pianos with ivory keys that were given too me and i was wondering if any cue maker might be interested in them??

I have sent Ivory for a cue to be built. The cuemaker stated that he would use his Ivory because he processes it before use. I don't think I would do it again. I am in the HVAC business. We do not like the customer buying the parts and having us install them. This not only cuts into the profit, they may supply inferior parts: compressor, condensing units or furnaces. Try taking the parts to your auto mechanic. I don't think so!!!!!
