Deluxe Cue Smith indexing ring improvement - DIY

I'm going to preface this by saying I did NOT call Chris Hightower about this because I felt the lathe was not broken and once I saw it I realized how easy of a fix it was so I didn't bother Chris with the issue.

I'm not sure about others but my indexing ring on my Deluxe Cue Smith had a bit of play in it from the get go. It wasn't much but if it moved when cutting a point it would've left a wavy line. I've had the lathe for about 6 months and have never cut points because of that. Fast forward to now and I finally got off my ass and made the parts.

What I did was drill out the hole for the existing indexing pin to 13/64 and then tapped it with 1/4-20 threads. Then purchased a 1/4-20 2" long thumb bolt and a 1/4-20 wing nut. The wing nut wouldn't fit in my little metal lathe so I made a nylon collet (in picture below) and used the Cue Smith lathe to turn down the bottom .35" (9mm) to 1.87 diameter (the stock pin is 1.88 but I missed it). I used a 45 degree cutting tool so it matches the (what appears to be) 45 degree chamfers on the top of the indexing holes on the lathe.

Then just attach the newly threaded 3/8" factory piece and thread the wing nut onto the thumb bolt and screw it into the lathe. The 45 degree chamfers lock together and then tighten the wing nut down like a jam nut and it won't rattle loose when running the router.

Hope this can help someone else and let me know if you have any questions.

Sorry for the blurry pic on the 2nd one down. It shows the nylon bushing, the original pin, and my part.

The last pic is the front of my lathe. It's the only one I had but should give an idea which one it is.

Again, let me know if you have any questions.

Nice addition. A simple phone call would have given you a simple adjustment that would have eliminated all the play. But it looks like you came up with a great solution.

Thanks for the response Chris. As mentioned, I came up with a quick idea which gave me reasons to use both of my new lathes so that's the road I took...👍

P.S. You're more than welcome to incorporate this idea if you'd like.
