Derlin butt cap

I'm definitely not an expert, but I thought you weren't ever supposed to put a finish over Delrin...it doesn't "stick" to the Delrin for long...

Correct. Tad used to finish over the his delrin buttcaps and they generally peel. It adds to the patina if you prefer that look though

If the Delrin is wet sanded to remove fine scratches and then use a rubbing compound, it shines. Tad used laquer on his cues and I believe Fred still uses it.

Agree, better to ask in the cuemaker section.

But, if you're a good do it yourself guy:

Masking tape over the buttsleeve, wet sand, very fine sandpaper over the buttplate, start with 600 and go up from there.

If you want to go the extra mile, finish with a Sunshine Cloth over the delrin. Although meant for jewelry, it does wonders for plastic as well.

Then, treat it well.

All the best,
WW

Very fine and 600 don't belong in the same sentence unless you work at home depot.

How can I bring the shine back to my Scruggs derlin butt cap. Do I need to get it refinishing

As a plastics engineer, I'd go with Mike Webb's post. And full disclosure, I didn't realize cue mechanics did this until this year watching one of the best in the business doing exactly this polishing on a plastic butt sleeve.

Delrin (acetal) is already a plastic that likes to shine with polishIng. It is a thermoplastic, which can remelt, so I would go to a cue mechanic that is familiar with this stripping and polishing technique on Delrin.

That's only the start, assuming there were nicks in the buttplate. If there weren't, I don't think the OP would have asked the question.

Of course, you go up from there to 2500 and /or steel wool and the sunshine cloth.

Depends on the cue. Finish thickness on Scruggs and Cochran cues out the door. Only .003 to .004.

Really?????
I saw your post on the inlay thread saying if you can add a logo you can add an inlay. Is there story there?

You can get a brand spanking new logo on Scruggs cues, didn't you know? Who's gonna do your sig after you're gone?

Well. I did know but there's only 2 people I know of that had Tim and Mike's permission to do it and it's suppose to be disclosed. Good question on mine. After last year I probably should have given it some thought. But I didn't.

Do you believe it was meant to be a service after their death or a service to help in their waning years? Lots of fake news everywhere.

Didn't know you had previous problems, sorry if it came off harsh, the question about your sig was rhetorical.

I wish I had the correct answer for you but this is what I know.
Michael's passing was a real shock.
The short answer is. I don't think anyone was prepared for the future restorations/refinishes or anything that involved Tim Scruggs or Mike Cochran cues. I don't know much.
God bless you Tim and Mike. You are missed.
PS
I should have added that might help. I know of 2 Cue makers and 1 collector that were very close to Tim up to the time of his passing. The Cue makers I won't disclose. The collector on the other hand is the one I call if I have questions on their cues. That would be shadowmoss.
