Well, whether the IPT is profitable or not we won't find out for a while. If the IPT is around in 3-4 years or more, then it is working. If it dies after KT's involvement is over or before - well, duh - there's our sign.
KT and the IPT will never ever publicly state that they are losing money or aren't making much at all. Who would want to get onboard a sinking ship?
Many of my friends in Europe have told me about the live coverage of the IPT. A lot of people saw the IPT - just not here in the USA. Sad. It is hard to say how successful or what kind of effect the IPT had on its viewers when its exposure isn't in your own country. The KOTH was great, but it seems its popularity and viewership was mostly still the good old already-pool fans. Fishing in the same pond...
I think KT is going to make the North American Open a series like the KOTH was and put it on OLN. I've been guessing that this next production will be the maker/breaker for the IPT in America. If it doesn't increase in ratings and popularity, look for the IPT to take off on a more international path (which it already is). Look at all the tournaments in 2007 scheduled and where they will be played. That's an indication of where the IPT believes it can be profitable. Europe and Asia. It is possible that these regions will take a liking to pool in the IPT fashion, while the people in the US will continue to never care about pool in any form.
I'm optimistic about the IPT's success overall, but I am pessimistic about its success as a semi-popular TV sport in America.
