I saw an obit for this character who apparently was a fixture around big poker tournaments. It said he was an expert pool player, but nothing further about pool, only poker. He wrote the song "I'm A Rovin' Gambler".

Some of his wisdom is applicable to pool:

Losing is like smoking - it's habit forming.

Fear is the basis of all mankind. In cards, you psyche 'em out, you shark 'em, you put the fear of God in 'em.

Ain't only three things to gambling: Knowing the 60-40 end of a proposition, money management and knowing yourself.:D

Yes, I believe he may have played once or twice at Johnston City. I think he played one pocket.
