I saw an obit for this character who apparently was a fixture around big poker tournaments. It said he was an expert pool player, but nothing further about pool, only poker. He wrote the song "I'm A Rovin' Gambler".
Some of his wisdom is applicable to pool:

Fear is the basis of all mankind. In cards, you psyche 'em out, you shark 'em, you put the fear of God in 'em.
Ain't only three things to gambling: Knowing the 60-40 end of a proposition, money management and knowing yourself.
