Dipping Shafts, Time frame?

Hello,

My question is If I'm dipping shafts in stabalizer How long before I can finish shaft. Whats too soon.

I have Been preparing 400 shafts for over a year now, I dipped them once after the 3rd cut, and a 2nd time with 2 cuts left I take about 9 cuts. I know those shafts are fine, and ready to go, but I have a great demand for my cues right now, and think I should have started more shafts. How long using stabalizer, dipping shafts twice, whats a good minimum amount of time to take from begining to end? And yes I have good shaft blanks decent grain. I know a year to 18 months is better but I've heard 4-6 months will do, is this true.

The only thing I will use the shafts I hurry, If I do hurry is Break/Jumps, and Jump cues.

Any Knowlege would be Apreciated.

Asumming you are using Nelsonite, here is what I understand about it.

About two weeks of drying time after a 30 second dip.
One dip 30 sec dip should properly treat a 1" dowel and not require further treatment. I use a method that treats the wood very deeply and if you are interested in knowing more about it send me a message and I will share it with you once I know who you are.

I dip them once they are about 5/8" at the tip end. I soak them one minute and let them dry for at least two weeks before finishing. One month would be better. What I really prefer is to dip them at 5/8" put them away for a few months and then finish them if time allows waiting.

Chris,

How big a factor is wood stress after dipping?
I once turned a shaft from 5/8 at the tip end down to a final taper and finish it all in one setting and it turned out ok, This was a high grain shaft and I'm using it on my personal cue. All in all I started my first turn on it and finished it in a months time.

Is this bad or am I just lucky?
The shafts have been stabilized for like 6 months before this

I think you were lucky. As using maple, we expect an awful lot. The key factor being maple has no memory which is why the time should be taken to season it.

If the shaft was dipped and you had already turned it down to 5/8", and then you took the last 3mm off in one month after it had sat at 5/8" for 6 months. I would see no problem with that. I can take that last 3mm off pretty fast if it has sat at 5/8" for at least a month before I start.

I dip mine after the first cut and then before the last cut. I would wait a minimum of two weeks between cuts. I have some that are ready for the finish pass and they have been hanging for almost a year.

I think the important thing to remember is that Nelsonite is a insurance policy and not a short cut.
