Dirty cue ball

Can a dirty cue ball cause a miscue no matter if you are chalked properly? Such as found in bar leagues where the equipment is not cared for.

A "dirty" cue ball can be sticky, slippery or even bumpy, depending on what kind of "dirt" gets on it.

Where bartenders and others neglect to ever clean the balls or the ball storage racks, you will often find them sticky from spilled drinks and food.

Where players slop talcum or other powders all over themselves and the table, you will find the balls skidding and sliding when they shouldn't be.

If the balls have bits of chalk on them, they will not roll true.

When I was still playing regularly, I carried my own cue ball, or would not hesitate to clean the cue ball myself when necessary.

Thanks Donny. We usually carry our own cb but we were playing away and used the bar cb. I was properly chalked and my tip was perfect. I actually miscued twice and almost lost the match but managed to survive. Both shots were draw shots when it happened; something I never do when using our own cb. I guess the lesson to be learned is not to try and put extreme English on the cb when using a house ball?
