Discolored shafts

I have two particular cues that have some shaft discoloring but I'm not sure where from. One playing cue has tiny dark lines where the grain is however it's underneath the clear coat, on the joint end of the shaft. I also have another cue that's more of a collectors cue that has never been played, however on the shaft there is a place about 2 by .5 inches oval that looks like a normal shaft that has been played with for about 2 weeks. This oval area has just the tiniest amount of green in the grain (like chalk). I don't know how this discoloration could have gotten there. Both cues have been stored vertically in either Whitten or Guiseppe cases. I take the collectors out on occasion to show off. Any ideas why either would discolor?

questions...

Is the joint collar black? I found out the hard way that when I cut, sand, or polish a black linen collar I have to keep compressed air blowing on the wood to get the black dust off it immediately or it imbeds in the wood grain and refuses to come out. If there is a clear finish over those few inches then it had to be there before it was sprayed!
And as far as chalk dust imbedding in one small area of your other shaft, I would reason that when the shaft was last sealed and polished there was no grain sealer put on that spot, or it was sanded off, then the chalk dust will find it and mark that spot fast!
Many people sand and burnish their shafts without cleaning and resealing the grain. When that step is eliminated it looks and feels great at first , but acts like a chalk dust magnet! You must clean the shaft with a rag dampened in pure alcohol often to keep it clean, whereas if a premium sealer is used it will stay clean way longer. And many cue sealers are not premium...good luck!
