Random thoughts... For this shot, the cue ball and one are exactly 1 balls width away from the rail. The shot is nearly straight (red arrow)

In the past I used to shoot this shot by aiming dead-on the object ball and using left english to throw the 1 ball (yellow arrow) I had trouble in the past about making shots that were almost straight but not quite. To compensate for this I used to throw the balls in since I could not hit the exact spot on the object ball, which would be like a millimeter or two to the left of center.
These days I it's pretty easy to make this shot either with or without english depending on the situation but I was just thinking back to the days when I couldn't make those "almost straight" shots without english. I was just wondering if anyone else used to do this for the almost straight shot?
