Random thoughts... For this shot, the cue ball and one are exactly 1 balls width away from the rail. The shot is nearly straight (red arrow)

In the past I used to shoot this shot by aiming dead-on the object ball and using left english to throw the 1 ball (yellow arrow) I had trouble in the past about making shots that were almost straight but not quite. To compensate for this I used to throw the balls in since I could not hit the exact spot on the object ball, which would be like a millimeter or two to the left of center.

These days I it's pretty easy to make this shot either with or without english depending on the situation but I was just thinking back to the days when I couldn't make those "almost straight" shots without english. I was just wondering if anyone else used to do this for the almost straight shot?

I hear what you are saying about spinning shots in that you just can't make normally, but if it's used as a crutch it can't be a good thing IMO. Obviously you fixed whatever stroke flaw was holding you back from making the shots before, and that's a good thing!

I do use spin to to make almost straight in shots sometimes playing 14.1 to keep the cueball where I want it, so it can be a useful shot. I learned those shots from Babe Cranfields' 14.1 Bible. He writes, you should practice shooting straight in shots with English on a regular basis, but He also sais about 90% or more of pool shots require NO English.

Good question,....Gerry
