I have a table out at work and we have a wide range of skill amongst the players so I thought about playing double check so all could participate but I am not sure of the rules (Been a long time since I plyed)

So I bought a bottle and pea set (16 peas) and we are going to try it out.

Basic Game Rules as I remember it.....

I thought you got 2 peas
Called check when your pea was pocketed
Double check on last pea being pocketed
Collect 1 betting unit per non checked pea

What I am not sure of
16 is the cue ball check on a scratch what makes a legal scratch if I am shooting and have the 16?

Do most double check games take out the 16?

When you start can you shoot at 1 and 15 only or is it also the 8 when 8 i spocketed then the 7 and 9?

Spotting of balls on scratch or bad hit especially if one is the a legit target ball (1 or 15 at start)

Player option if coming in after bad hit or a scratch

Any help on the rules would be appreciated

I saw that site earlier but that has rules for 9 ball double check and I want to use all 15 balls

I was also wanting responses from anybody who had played double check and see what other local rules might have been used so we could get the best overall set of rules

best I remember

This was the first gambling game I ever played on the pool table in Southside Virginia in the early sixties. If I remember correctly here is how it goes.
All players draw three pills-after looking at the rack players choose one pill as their break position-First person breaks-if a ball is pocketed they keep shooting-they must shoot the one, eight or fifteen-if the one is made, then they can shoot the 2,8,or 15-if the 15 is made then they can shoot the 2,8,or 14-if the 8 is made the shooter can go up or down from there-as a ball is made ifa player has that ball they will say check-if a players second ball is made they say check out and are paid from everybody .Balls are spotted on scratchs and bad hits- One Shot is another game we played back then for about a dollar a game-players draw two pills-look at rack and decide break pill-if breaker makes a ball on the break he shoots again, but that is the only time you ever get two shots-if your ball is made first you win-only foul is a scratch-if a ball is made on a scratch, then it is spotted-you shoot to make your ball anyway you can-helps you learn caroms and combinations

My final double check rules

Fifteen Ball Check And Double Check

1. Fifteen balls are racked with the #1 in front, the #8 and #15 are on opposite back corners:

2. Two to eight players can play

3. Sixteen tally balls are placed in bottle and two are shaken out to each player.

4. Regular rotation rules are followed, except that shooter can shoot up from the #1 ball, out from the #8 and down from the #15 ball.

5. When a ball is pocketed for which a player holds the corresponding tally ball, player must call “check”. (The #16 tally ball corresponds to the cue ball, and the first time the cue ball is pocketed—scratched—the player holding #16 pill must call “check”. If this player’s other ball has been pocketed, and he is shooting and the cue ball has not previously been pocketed, he must have hit a legal object ball before scratching). If a player fails to call “check” when his ball is pocketed, he is “dead” and cannot win the game. When a player's second ball is pocketed, he calls “double check” and wins the game.

6. If two or more balls are pocketed on one shot and two or more players call “double check”, the player wins whose ball went in first on this shot, except that if one of the callers is the shooter, he is the winner regardless of the order in which the balls fell in the pockets.

7. If the cue ball is scratched, following player has cue ball in hand behind foul line. If all target object balls are also behind the foul line, the one nearest to the foot spot may be spotted if so desired by the incoming shooter.

8. Betting is in units and will be paid at the end of the game one unit per unchecked pea.
