actually I also use a drill though I don't mount it on anything. Cornerman turned me on to creating a "bit" to hold the shaft out of a crutch tip. Works pretty darn good.

I'm trying to convert a variable speed drill in a manner to chuck up a shaft so I can spin it at various speeds. I would need something to hold a 5/16" x 14 shaft. I cam across the info above where a guy used a drill and a crutch tip. He somehow created a "bit" to hold his shaft in the drill chuck (man that sounds bad LOL!). Anyone know what this "crutch tip" is?

Thanks.

Did you PM Fred? Seems like he had the original idea...

Edit - one of these may have been the missing link.

You can google crutch tip cue lathe. The first I heard of it was from Forum member Spiderman (Marty Jones from Texas).

Here's a thread that members showed their crutch tip tools. I'm sure the same thread that you copied the quote had photos as well.

I've used both a cane tip and a crutch tip. Jude Hammond from Shaftmaster uses some kind of chair leg tip I think.

I just contacted a local cue maker and he let me buy one of his Schon pins...
I put the pin into my drill and just slowly screw the shaft onto it.
Makes cleaning the shaft a breeze
