Any one hooked up a drum switch on a 220 v motor? This thing is driving me nuts. Might need to sleep on it. line 1 black and yellow strapped red, orange, and white strapped, brown taped, line 2 purple. so the diagram on the motor says. Switch red and black to reverse rotation. Drum switch according to 2 phase diagram the motor makes a horrid noise like it is out of time. I have no schematic on the windings of the motor. It is a capacitor start farm use 220 v motor from tractor supply. Old one was junk when I got the lathe. It only had 3 wires.

John,
Don't remove any wires from the drum switch. It's logical that it was wired correctly for the motor that came with the lathe. I've had experience with single phase and 3 phase electrics in voltages to 440 V. I've only heard of 2 phase being used in some parts of the country but not around here. Confirm with your local power co. what type of supply that you have in your area and buy the motor accordingly. Make sure that the motor you buy is in fact reversible and is of the same phasing and voltage as what you have coming into the shop. I'm curious, what was the phase of the motor that you removed and what does the power co. tell you about the phasing at your location. Your time may be better spent talking to an electrician in your area.

It is 230 singe phase as commonly known. My switch is calling it 2 phase because of the 2 hot legs. The old motor was blown up and did not have the same wire configurations as the new one. New motor is reversible but I need to find the start and run sides of the windings. I guess that is what I need help with. J10 & T4 strapped Line 1, T3 strapped to T4 & T6 P1 line2 P2 taped & not used. Reverse J10 and T6 to reverse motor.

Here is what I have found http://www.hytrol.com/view.cfm?file=im_electricalwiring_010105.pdf
