Earl Stickland Offensive Straight Pool

Earl Strickland

Pro Player
I was not one of the great straight pool players because my background was in 9-ball. As time went by I learned more about straight pool by praticing the game more.Straight pool is a game that tests your character, integrityand your ability to think fast but play deliberate. We really appreciate all the positive response to straight pool ..It is nice to knowthere are still alot of people intersted in watching straight pool.In the past I've played under some conditions I did not like, for example one hundred or fifty point match. This is to short and playing on five inch pockets is too easy.If we make the conditions difficult but not phony this could be the most intelligent pocket billiards game on earth .Statistics are easily kept playing offensive straight pool. There are no more of the missing and snookering players. In 9-ball what is the most comman thing you hear after you just lost your match? You got lucky when you missed and snookered me behind the four ball,or you got every bad break in the match and he got every good roll .The most positive thing about offensive straight pool is you are really your own woarst enemy because you are playing the table more than you are playing the player much like in golf .Someone mentioned on the thread that you would need a time out.It is needed. There will be six time outs only. This will teach you to use your time wisely.I will be busy till after the BCA 9 ball in vegas and then we will continue this discussion, and please keep it going while I am away to raise more interst in offensive straight pool.Thankyou Earl Strickland

just from this board, i sense a growing interest in 14.1

i think people are tired of 9ball, the "luck" involved.now all that needs to be done is get rid of that crazy notion of selling pool to the general public, and feeding the appetite of those who love the game for what it is.

I agree with you Earl. 14.1 is a great game & the better player usually wins. I do not think it will take off on tv due to time constraints without being heavily edited. Good Luck at the Tourny!

earl, HUGE FAN.
I can the relationship between your post and your play. If the game is anything offensive your explosiveness (sp?) will keep many in thier seats just like in 9 ball. I think we need something like this. There was a television show in the late 50's called 10-20. It was based on striaght pool but each inning was was ending after you score 10 points, then you would have to play safe upon making your 10th ball to make it tough for the upcoming shooter to make his first shot. I have some of these episodes on dvd, with players like irving crane, balsis, and so on.
But the problem as I see it, is the sport have moved into the oppisite direction as far as the tele goes. The finals in a 9 ball match used to consist of more games then the semi and QF, but now it is the oppisite. Then comes 7 ball. I am not even going to touch that.

Yet in the rooms 1 pocket and straight pool is getting to be more popular then 9 ball is some towns. Especially here in chicago. So, I don't think it is a far stretch to sell it to players, good luck on selling it to america.
