Hi i was just watching some action of WPC and noticed earl is using quite a few "gizmos" to help improve his game. ( this is not a bash on ear thread, i am young player and wanting ot have some explenation if possible )

1. Amber Color Glasses
2. The Nike Glove

also i heard he was told to take the finger extensions off at the start of the tourney, i was just wondering what are the glasses for? to stir up thoughts or to help block out the glare of the lights? and the glove on his back hand whats that all about? i just want to know, i have the upmost respect for Earl as he is a awesome player.

Also during the match he kept saying to Fu, im too Old to win, your going to win. "Is that always his mentality" i have only seen earl play a couple times.

Oh and if you dont know who im talking about its Earl Strickland

I don't know about the Gizmos but i have heard Earl bemoan his age and say he cant win anymore during a match. It may be a reverse Psych thing or maybe not. Who knows with him

Keep watchin- he is full of surprises for the newbie

I do believe you want to change that 'then' in your signoff to 'than'- it makes a world of difference.

LMAO nice link... may want to change Belive to Believe too, but I don't have a link to prove it...LOL.

Just playing with ya...

the glasses are eyelits, a paid sponsor.

the glove i am sure is the same thing.

earl often times says that he can't win, and it is a reverse psychology move. earl has many 'moves' that he puts on his opponents, everything from verbal absurdities like being too old, to verbal abuse to the opponent and the crowd, to criticizing the equipment to the point where his opponent doesn't see how he could possibly run out on it. Also, he has this thing that he does when it's humid, like it always is at the us open, he actually 'dries' the cloth and balls with his towel to make his opponent think there is something wrong with the equipment. don't get me wrong, earl is one of the greatest champions of all time, but watch his antics during a match, especially if he's playing a friend of yours or someone you know, and you will definitely lose alot of respect for him.

having said that, perhaps the tail can wag the dog like kid delicious has done against earl. danny's slow play makes the pearl so angry that he cannot bring it together and beat him. not to take anything away from danny, he's a great player, jam up for the dough and when the heat is on, but c'mon, this earl strickland, multi us open champ, multi world champ. most here would agree that as strong as delicious is, he's not the favoriate against the pearl, but, he wins. hey earl, don't dish out the moves if you can't handle them yourself.

i saw a nice display of earls antics against a great player from vineland, nj a few years ago at valley forge. earl could see that he was in danger of losing to this man(rightfully so) and started with the full barage of moves, holding nothing back including cursing at the hometown field of people cheering for Garcia. Earls antics earned him a win in that match, and 2 dozen more fans that lost total respect for him. btw, the game was 8 ball, best 2 out of 3 races to five. Earl was the stone cold underdog, and he realized this and thats when the bag of tricks came out. Earl knows Jose, Jose whooped him playing straight pool at the NYC straight pool tournament at amsterdam years ago. Yet, as part of his antics, he refered to Jose as a 'B' player. Those of you who know who I'm talking about know that Jose not only is not a B player, but is subject to defeat any world class player playing 8 ball, 9 ball, 10 ball, 14.1, whatever. I was an earl fan since i was a little kid, right up until I saw what he did to jose. If anyone here has ever watched Jose play, they will know exactly what I am about to describe. Jose is a straight pool player, hmm, lemme rephrase that, a straight pool purist. He plays the game in the time honored fashion, tap here, nudge there, never hits a ball hard. He plays all games just like that, tap here, nudge there, and next thing you know, you're outta the tournament. Well, this drove earl nuts, he couldnt believe that jose was rolling all of these balls in, running out and beating him. And, on top of that, he couldn't believe that myself and and 18 other jose fans were cheering for him everytime he won a game and that nobody cheered for earl. so, he turns around to us and says, and i quote, 'this b player runs around the table tapping all the balls in and you cheer for him like he's a world champion'. lol earl, you didn't make any friends that day.

sorry, didn't want to make this into a jose garcia thread, but thats my earl story.

better? lol
he was saying stuff to the tai crowd and yelling beating his cue, sitting in his chair head between the legs moving non stop, then Fu, asks for a chalk removal from the ball, earl was outraged i was laughing my @$$ off with my dad.

Just a tad bit better! You still need to make the correct belive to believe and make the "b" lower case. Also, the two "i"s need to be capitalized. And to polish it all up, would need to be added in the second line so it would say "I would rather" instead.

For example:

I believe half of what I see and none of what I hear.

and

I would rather shoot again, than sit in my chair and watch.

Just messing with your nerves. Yeah, Earl has his own fantasy game and he's quite good at it too.

Muxy,

The glasses are designed to brighten the playing field in your line of vision. Anything that can help you make the edge of the object ball more defined maybe useful. The same company makes glasses with "flashing" LED's on the eye side of the lens. It's supposed to help correct your vision like the glasses with tiny holes.

Some players here in Upstate New York also use a glove on the back hand. They claim it allows a sweaty hand to control the cue better especially if you "slip" stroke.

Earl's a jerk! Hard for anyone to defend him. Having said that, he is also one of the greatest technical players. I would guess he has a fear of failure. Anytime he gets into a position where he may lose, he starts agitating his opponent hoping they will collapse. Because he plays so well, both on the table and to the crowd, some are willing to give him rope at major events. It still does not make it right!

Not so bad

Earl was at the Planet-Pool stop this weekend. I directed the event. I have to say, with all of the stories that I've heard, and previously witnessed, I was worried about being the director at an event that he would be in.
Suprisingly, he was very well behaved. He ended up getting knocked out by Mike Davis, and took a 7th-8th position in a 64 player field. He did have the finger extensions, he did have the glove, no amber glasses though. The room is usually humid, he didn't wipe down any of the tables.
Even more suprising. During his match with Mike. He sat absolutely silent. Didn't mutter a single word during the match.
There were no allowances made for him. He was on time for the event, and was on-time for his matches, there wasn't a need to put him on the clock.
He didn't throw any tantrums, and he didn't need to be warned during any match. He was complaining that he can't win and that he was the worst player there, but he did his complaining after his matches. Not during. No different than most of the regular guys playing.
The funniest part was the surprise on his face at the end of his match on Saturday night - he looked at the chart and said "So, I have to win tomorrow morning to be in the money?" and when we told him he was already in the money he said "You're kidding me - I haven't been in the money in my last four tournaments!" Then headed out quietly for the evening.

It was kind of strange - I feel like we're losing one of our most colorful characters. But the U.S. Open reports will tell the tale.
