Emerald Eyes

These eyes of mine are sometimes dark,
Yet sometimes bright and filled with life.
So to these words you should hark,
Or become a wretch, riddled with strife.
You cannot hide your pain from me,
The eyes show me it all.
For I know what others cannot see,
And it is I that will give the clarion call.
This body cannot be made to kneel or bow,
Against my sole will to do so.
Live not in the past, but the here and now,
And hang your head not low.
You can hide all day behind a mask,
Yet not even a mask can hide your eyes.
Forever the illusion cannot last,
Eventually your eyes will tell your lies.
The eyes are called the windows to the soul,
So take a moment to gaze into mine,
And you will see a soul so very old.
Let not my mask fool you, for I can be kind,
Even having endured a world so cold.
I cannot hide behind these emerald eyes,
The pain of having seen entire worlds die.
