Yesterday i was playing a guy and it the score was close...he kept being "on" 6 or 8 points, the 6 and 7 were left and i did not know where to leave him in order for me to be at an advantage...one that sticks out, 7 on the spot and 6 4 inches off rail behind 4 spot...cue ball was just left of 7...I tried to play the cue 2 rails to get behind the 7 but hit it bad and sold out the 6...what is the right shot?

Where was the pink supposed to go?

You believe the snooker wizards posting here that rolling up behind a ball is simple :D:D

IIRC you are playing on a smaller than regulation table, so these alternatives have less success, but are the basic choices.

Distance, Leave a Bank, Snooker

Distance - hit the pink to get it to the other end rail, if you get lucky, you may get it behind the black. Leave the cue ball on the baulk rail. More important to get the object ball to the rail than to get the cue ball tight to the rail. You don't want to leave a cut shot

Leave a bank - hit the pink half ball, the pink and cue go to opposite side rails, half way between the baulk and centre pockets.

Snooker - if you can get one with the pink behind the black, great, but if you don't, you have probably left a cut to a pocket. A snooker with all three balls on the same rail is good.

To play good safety you need to have the speed of the table down cold - and hope your opponent doesn't. :D

And be patient.

This is good advice...the most common end-game safety in snooker.
Look at it as a cross-bank...the 6-ball goes down the middle of the table
and hits the 7-ball. Practice your weight control on this shot...it will come
up often when there are few balls left.

hmmmm...I wonder why Underclocked is inquiring about the air-fare to
Toronto...I'm thinking Scaramouche better start practicing..:)

I am a simple soul.
Please explain why you would want to hit the black with the pink?
The objective of the shot I suggested is to put the cue ball on one end rail and the cue ball on the other end rail, leaving the black where it is.
Hitting the black would risk putting both balls over pockets, or maybe sinking the black.
Introduces unpredictable outcomes.
Presumably, it also eliminates the possibility of a snooker with the pink behind the black.

I use the 'black' on these shots as my 'focal' point...
..I hope it doesn't hit the 'black', but if my weight is good, it won't
matter.
I think it is unrealistic to attempt a snooker in this case....
...6-ball and cue-ball at opposite ends of the table is good enough.
 
Something like a half ball hit sending the pink to the side rail between the center pocket and the top rail (black Pocket) just control the speed.

Thin hit the pink and bring the CB back by the black. Consistent thin hits are much harder than they look so this option is there but if you catch it too thick you will leave it on.

Just off center hit to return the pink down by the black, easy to double kiss or bank towards the corner pocket, speed and accuracy required.
 
Jimmy went from bad luck to good. That last snooker of his, the one he got by sheer luck, won the frame for him.

No, I'm not checking plane fares. At 61, I'm so far past my prime that I doubt I'll be flying anywhere to play anyone. :)

this is what I tried and I hit it too thick...sold the farm:)
