Good news / bad news day yesterday.

I was playing pool, when suddenly something clicked. Instead of my usual ghost ball - based aiming system, I just lined up where I wanted to put the OB, kept the line in my mind's eye, and shot on instinct.
And it worked like a charm :)

Since then I've kept using it, and it looks like this could really fix my game up. I used to read people putting down the ghost ball and advocating feel, and well, I didn't want to buy into it, mainly because I relied on the ghost ball all the way.

Hopefully now I can go onto better things though.
Yesterday was the first day in quite a while that I've played shots that even surprised myself, and that's what I really love about the game - making shots I could normally never even dream of.

I just hope I can keep going this way :D

But there was bad news too. My trip across the atlantic is off.
I'd planned on a year in Canada (from the UK), but a tumor on my leg forced me to delay the visit until after the operation to remove it.
I needed to be in Canada before the end of the year or I'd lose my visa entitlement. As the days went on it looked increasingly unlikely, but I got news of my next hospital appointent, and spoke to the consultant's office, yesterday, and I'm not going to be able to do it.

Oh well. I guess you guys will have to manage without me in your continent. Sorry :(

I do think aiming systems, whether it's the ghost ball or some other system, is needed for players starting out. It gives you a frame of reference for where to aim. However, once you've played enough, you'll know because you will start to get lazy and start shooting on instinct, you should shoot the majoroty of your shots by instinct. Occasionally, when you have a very tough shot and it's also a critical shot, you'll resort back to that aiming system to bolster your feeling for where to aim.

Wow, things have been going very well with my shot for the last couple of days.

Although I'm missing a few that I'd expect to make with the old systems, I'm consistantly making shots that were maybe 20% a week ago.

Hopefully I'll keep improving, I think I'm still on a steep learning curve, but I might have to start playing snooker just to be able to challenge myself with long pots :)
