Ernie Martinez Jump/Break

Hello all,

I have an Ernie Martinez custom jump/break cue that I am selling. And since I had good luck with the Zebra Justis case on AZB (thanks), I thought I would try you folks again. It was much less stressful dealing with a close-knit group of knowledgable people than eBay where you don't know who you are dealing with. Again, I will accept paypal if the buyer wants to deal direct through AZB or money order/cashier's check if the buyer would feel more comfortable going through eBay (buy it now at the agreed upon price).

This cue is a great hitting custom cue, not made from a house cue. Although it's a jump/break, it easily could be your playing cue. I have a buyer locally for $700 but he doesn't have the money right now, so it's first come first serve. I need a minimum of $650 so please make any offer you feel is reasonable (over the $650). You can submit any bids publicly or privately, your choice. My contact info is: ebilliards@comcast.net, (970) 231-7540.

NOTE: I was told by the guy who offered $700 that Ernie did not make many of these and it is worth $750-$900 in this condition.

Description: The forearm is made from a beautiful piece birdseye maple (nice satin), the handle (below the b/j joint) is a solid piece of rosewood down to a thin buttplate (matching rosewood joint protector for butt only). The buttplate has Ernie's signature logo and octagon bevel, along with the rubber bumper. Also, has Ernie's signature pin that comes to a point. The butt weighs 15.6 oz. It comes with one shaft that is 13.25" and weighs 3.9 oz. Everything on this cue is original except for the tip (don't know what kind: lePro or Triangle I would guess). It has the original oil-based finish that is worn but looks awesome...reminds me of a Harvey Martin type finish after years of use. There is some blueing in the birdseye peice but I will not refinish this cue, I like them original. The cue is straight both together and apart (shaft & butt).

Thanks for looking,

Dave

After over 60 views, no comments? That's not like what I read in most of the threads. What gives? By the way, this is a great playing and collectable cue!

Dave

Honest opinion? It's too expensive for a plain jane cue...period. I don't know the cuemaker personally and it's rather ordinary looking IMO...don't flame me guys here...but I think it's overpriced.

Usually if a cue is here over 24 hours with no replies, that is what it means...or it's an ugly cue.

Shorty

I was thinking the same thing shorty. There was a another jb on here the other day for 650 also I dont think it did much either.I cant see paying that much unless its a real real nice cue and by a well known maker.

The name Ernie Martinez is a name I'm always looking for in a cue as I consider him one of the greatest cue makers in history. Don't know why, but he doesn't make cues any more, so his cues are hard to come by. So don't let the guys on this forum try to convince you that your cue isn't worth anything. However, I would have to agree that to folks that aren't aware of Ernies work and reputation, your asking price is a little steep. I personally would not be interested in a 3 piece, but a regular playing cue would grab my attention.
Don't know if it's the pics or not, but the cue looks like it's in pretty rough shape.
In top condition, you have what some folks would consider a very nice investment, but in the condition that it appears to be in the pics, I would wait out the $700 offer 'cause that's a pretty good price based on what I see in the pics.

Thanks for your response, Shorty. Ernie Martinez is considered by many to be one of the most talented cuemakers in the modern era. He started making cues while at Showcase Billiards in Denver. Although Showcase continues to make fine cues, the cues Ernie made for them were by far the best cues that shop ever produced and are collectable today. The plain sneaky petes Ernie made while at Showcase (using house cues) sell today as high as $350. Ernie went off on his own in the early 90's. He started making those 6-point sneakys and standard sneakys to get cash flow. You'll notice no use of fiber at the joints. These cues still play well (and are collectable), but do not play as well as after he began using the fiber material in all joints, including the j/b portion. The cue I have listed is probably from 97/98 time frame after he began usind that material.

If you find an Ernie that has points and you can afford it, buy it. You won't believe the talent this guy has, mabe the best points of all the modern cuemakers, or at least among the best. Ernie stopped making cues around 2000/2001 and left the Denver area. Because of this and his quality of workmanship, hit and feel, his cues has become one of the most sought after cues in the industry. Ernie recently showed up in the Denver area again after about 4+ years and set up shop (I have a cue on order). Ernie does not work full time and is currently on vacation, but we're all glad he's back.

If you look on Cueaddicts.com website, you'll find 2 of ernie's works of art and here's what cueaddicts have to say about him: "Ernie is arguably one of the most talented cuemakers ever ...". That's who Ernie Martinez is :).

By the way, there was recently a post for a plain Ernie sneaky pete made from a valley cue and there was a couple of $300 bids, but the seller wanted $500-$600. I agree, that's a little high for that one, but not the one I have listed.

Hope the brief description of Ernie and his history was at least educational to all.

Thank you, Dave. To answer your statement above, the cue is in awesome shape-no noticeable dings and is perfectly straight. The only thing you may be viewing is the finish, which is an all original oil-based finish, which has worn off a bit, as all finishes of this type do over time. I hope this helps and thanks again for your response.

Your cue looks like it doesn't have a clear coat finish on it in the pictures and that's knocks the price down for me. I don't dispute that it's rare & a valuable cue, but $750 to $900 is too much (in my opinion) for a plain J/B cue in the condition yours is in.
I wouldn't mind owning the cue, but for that kind of money i'd have to go with one of the top cue makers who would build me a new J/B cue for that amount.

Good luck with it,
SCCues

Thanks, SCCues. Just to clarify, it never had a clear coat finish, it is/was oil based. And, I'm accepting bids starting at $650.

Thanks for your comments. Hey, did we meet in Jacksonville at the Predator tourney? Are you Art that was selling the Kenny Murrell and we discussed a trade for Jim Buss? If so, Hi.
