Played a few games with My dad tonight. had some real good games, showed him a few tricks that have been helping me against the heavy hitters in league lately, and he was really picking things up nicely. Made for good competition between the 2 of us, one miss, and the other ran out. I had a few nice break and runs as a result of being forced to play better, so i really enjoyed the time playing, and always enjoy seeing him play at that level.
well anyway, early in the night the owner of the pool room gives us a house cue that someone broke. it was one of the dufferins, but the ones with a collar on the butt and a pin, but glued onto the shaft with no collar, well it busted the shaft with no collar, so I end up with a blank that actually has some nice curl in it. anyway just thought what happened later was strange to happen in the same night, and kind of fits the moral of this story.
I have a dufferin I cut down a put a joint in, been breaking with it on and off for maybe a year now, full time since i sold My break cue about 2 months ago.
Well tonight it was working well for me and as i mentioned I was getting good enough breaks with it to run some racks out. Eventually My dad started slugging me alittle on the racks. it was working, and so I ended up breaking harder and harder until the ball started catching air. The cue was riding under the CB too much when I hit that hard, so i started picking My spots better and started getting the breaks again. then he locked me up again some how on the racks. real funny stuff i'd mess with him and acuse him of racking slugs, and he would tell me i was jacking My cue up too much and getting under the CB. finally enough was enough last set for the championship, everyone that does that one right? well he ends up 2 to My one in a race to 5. I snap one run off and tie the game, go to break the next one, CB Flies off the table again, he starts woofing Me again about jacking up. somehow I end up pulling that out, after a rare miss by him, and I'm up for the next break. I leveled that cue out middle ball and just let that thing go with one good hard snap. The joint of the shaft just exploded in My hand
. No kidding, I looked at him and said now tell me you aren't racking me slugs, I just shattered my cue because of them
Anyway the moral of this one is collars are a good thing, I've heard it argued before, but I have always believed in the old school guys that have been ahead of me when they mentioned this. the main reason was because i've seen too many people lean up against them while against a wall or something, and the sides can split, so i figured if for no other reason, because of that, what I had actually seen happen Myself. Well that's not the only way they can split.
I hit the CB so perfect in the middle that it flexed the shaft all the way up into the joint and shattered It. This shaft was cut from the same house cue, so it was shorter with a stiff taper, and i guess there just was no room left to flex, and it flexed all the way up into the joint area. I could feel it flex and travel from the tip to the joint and then it just went to pieces.
Anyway sorry if I'm rambling here, or gave more details then needed. just thought I would share this story since it involves cue construction..
