Facing Fiber Pad for Tip Replacement?

A little while back, there was a thread on ivory ferrules and whether or not a fiber pad was necessary. My cue has a fiber pad, and I would like to change the tip, but my tip guy doesn't carry fiber pads and isn't sure how to face the fiber pad already on the ferrule for a new tip. Could someone please explain this to me, so that I may explain to him? Thanks?

Facing fiber pad

I've changed tips on cues that have had a fiber pad. In most cases, I could simply skim cut the pad after removing the tip and install a new one. If you damage the pad when removing the old tip, you will have to install a new one. Prather and Atlas both sell them.

BTW, if you're using a lathe this applies. If you're doing it by hand with one of the cue top sanders, I don't know how that will work.

That would scare me if it were my cue.

Face it just like normal. Just enough to remove the old tip and glue. Take the least possible off of the pad.

Actually, Murray......it does scare me, which is why I have not had him touch my cue yet. I may just take it to a local cuemaker...or down to Lynnwood to Dave Jones. The last time I had someone local replace tips (not this guy) he cooked the ferrules on both my husband's AND daughter's cues! Maybe I should just move back east...as good cue repair around here is hard to find. Been thinking about moving back to FL for over a year now....I lived in Pensacola for almost 10 yrs.

Thanks for the advice tho'....it is appreciated! BTW....congrats on the new addition!! Let me know if you both need any helpful tips to ease the transition. I've done it 3x now, two of my own (both young adults now, child bride, don't ya know), and my husband's daughter we recieved as an infant. If I could get him through it, I can get anybody!...LOL. ;)

Take care!

I for sure would go to another cuemaker/repair person if he was afraid of the fiber pad....

Yeah, I have decided to just wait until I can have someone else do it. Thing is, he was recommended to me...but I am just not comfortable, so I'm not gonna do it. The tip replacement need is not immediate. Besides, I shouldn't have to be tellin' this guy how to face a fiber pad. I appreciate the response tho'.

Update

Well, after one of the worst shooting nights of my life on Saturday, I kew this Triangle tip just had to go, even if it meant sacrificing the fiber pad. So, off I went to the poolhall.

Well, perhaps my worry was for not. I told the guy to just install a Moori directly to the ferrule, as I could abide the Triangle no longer! He says, give me about an hour. So, I hang out at the PH, sitting around and BS'ing and such. About an hour later, he brings me my shaft to try out...won't let me leave without testing it first. Not only did he do a wonderful job installing the tip, he retained the fiber pad!!!, but he said he also found a small dent in the shaft, so he went ahead and removed it and polished up the shaft, all at no extra charge!

So, for anyone living in the North Puget Sound area of WA, Bob's Billiard Supply in Mt Vernon, located inside Riverside Billiards and Blues, is the place to go for your tip replacement needs! My cue feels like it should, and I had a VERY good shooting night last night...YEAH!

I second that. Bob is meticulous in everything he does so it takes extra time, but it's worth the wait. :)
