If you really want to screw up a good player or gambler, go up to him and ask him these very same questions. Most of them don't have a clue, they will look at their grip saying I don't know, let me look. They then begin to think about it and the next day the poor guy can't run 3 friggin balls and is now starving and can't pay his bookie. It's a very cruel shark.
I use a lot of differnt holds to produce different shots. On most of my shots I have all of my 4 fingers on the cue which gives me maximum accuracy and stablity to prevent the cue from twisting at impact. I vary pressure of those fingers from finger to finger to do different things as well. I hold the cue very lightly, it just lays in my hand. I hold it with my finger tips, most hold it with their fingers cupped around it laying on the middle of the fingers. I
truly hold it with all 4 finger tips, my tips get a little up the side of the cue, like Greenleaf did and McCreedy does now. When I want to add power and snap, I take fingers off, might use 3, 2 on some, for max whip I hold with just the index and thumb, the Willie Hoppe tea cup grip. it's very complex, hard if not impossible to describe over this forum, but I tried to.
May God bless and peace be with you. May the wind be always on your back and all 9 balls fall. VENI VIDI VICI, OMNIA VINCIT AMOR. Latin for “I came, I saw, I conquered, love conquerors all.
