Favorite League Format

I’m looking for new league formats to offer my players and would like to hear what your favorite league formats are. My league plays in-house at a new upscale poolroom, and most of the customers are not currently league players. What formats do you think attract new players into a league? What formats are favored by seasoned players?

Leagues

Haven't played league for awhile. Never could make
up my mind whether I preferred match play or
round robin play. I like both. The match play
usually offers stiffer competition.

Many leagues here offer a mid-session tournament
halfway done, and end of session tournament with
additional payouts to the normal league payouts.

10 ball is a variation played here. Not 10 ball like
9 ball, but where you compete as 2 person teams,
and score it like bowling. A friend on mine and his
partner just won a 10 ball league and got $1100 back.

I think a rotation league, which I have never seen,
would be offered. It is something different, fun to play,
and I think it would draw players of all skill levels.

Straight Pool league here, but small participation, but
they like it well, but hard to keep players in it over
the long run.

No 1 Pocket league here, but ongoing 1 pocket tournaments
at 1 place with 4 GC. Most rooms here have only bar
tables and maybe 1 full sized except our big SidePockets
which has 9 full sized tables plus 24 bar tables.

The way leagues are handicapped has built in conflicts
between local vs regional vs national play, and therefore
sandbagging and other things go on.

Personally I would like to see an advanced league playing
what I call Dakota 8 ball. Normal 8 ball except after
the first ball is made you have to shoot in ascending order
like 9 ball till you get to the 8.

Seasoned players prefer straight forward situation, win and win the money. Fun players mixed with some seasoned players will adapt to anything. My league offers various venues scotch, 8-9ball, straight pool, 3 man 5 man, pool halls, taverns divisions , race formats to 21 or 15 one half season 9ball next half 8 ball. If you use your imagination it will be fun, they will come

Wow. Hey Mark.

The league I play in now combines the round robin scoring with heads up match up.

We use the standard 5x5 matrix, but play one on one, 5 games. The scoring is based on how we did against our opponent, and how our entire team did, round for round. Game 1 in any matchup is round 1. Game 2 is round 2. And so on.

If it's viewable for non-members, the scoresheet can be seen at:
