I noticed during the Mosconi cup many European players had short ferrules on thier cues. This may have been asked before but I couldn't find it. What difference does the length of the ferrule make? My best guess is a shorter ferrule would hit a little firmer, I may be mistaken.

It may also be related to low deflection since ferrule material weighs more than maple.

A shorter ferrule is often used to reduce deflection. Ferrule materials are typically heavier than maple. End mass at the tip contributes to deflection, so a shaft with a lighter weight ferrule has a little less deflection.

A shorter ferrule will, of course, play differently than a longer one. How it is different (firmer, crisper, softer, etc) might depend on the specific ferrule material used, and one's subjective definition of the word.

My standard ferrule length is 3/4". As you noted, shorter ferrules (on both low deflection and normal shafts) are fairly common.

Thanks for the answers! I may consider changing to a shorter ferrule, I currently have a 1". I know it'll take some getting used to but shouldn't be too much difference.
