I am going to start practicing putting ferrules on. I was wondering which are most commonly used and for what reasons? Capped? Non-capped? Threaded? Ivorine vs fibre vs PVC. And such... Your input is greatly appreciated!!

Ferrule materials and methods will be all over the board. First, learn how to install a hole-through and then the threaded. Most all other types will be a variation of these.

Capped ferrels are stronger as the cap supports the sides ... threaded is not required as adhesives today are way stronger ... Linen based melamine , Aegis , G-11 , and canvas and linen phenolic are pretty much the strongest materials around ... go slow and a little cut at a time ... At base of ferrel get into the wood very slightly on final pass and it will sand out flush and smooth ... Best to cut tip towards the shaft , especially the layered ... be patient and good luck ...
