Figured Out Something About the Stroke

Finally! I figured out why my stroke has been so crooked. At the very end of my backstroke I pull the back of the cue towards my body. This makes the forward delivery naturally crooked. I didn't even notice it when I practiced looking in a mirror. If you have a straight backstroke it's much easier to have a straight delivery. Duh! I can't believe how long it took me to figure out why my stroke has been off.

stroke fix

whats up, glad you figured your stroke out, if you are still having problems, line up the cue ball 2 inches from the rail on the head string, place oblject ball 2 inches from rail on foot string, use one hand stroke to make ball, do this over and over, i usually do this for 30 balls when i warm up, keeps your stroke in line, if you use 1/2 tip high english, the cue ball will follow straight in behind the object ball, then you know your stroke in back in line, i have a great video to help you out with this, email me at obrien714@gmail.com if your interested,

Yep, the 2 ball rail shot in the long corner will force you to keep your stick parallel with the rail, and might help. I had the same problem recently from lack of practice. Wish I would have remembered this one before I figured out the problem the hard way.

Overextending on shots has also caused Me simular problems before.

I am still working on it, but getting better. Shot for a few hours tonight only had a limited number of kick shots come up, but was probably around 95% on what I did shoot. Don't remember missing any, but feel I should atleast give some room just in case.

A Month ago I was batting zero on kicks because of this, and thought I had lost My ace in the hole forever. I am hoping I figured the problem out, and It's not just a fluke. I don't figure I will be perfect everynight, but would be nice to be batting alleast a consistent 50% average. Greg

Ummmmm. . . Yea. . . I'm confused.

Maybe your elbow is not over your cue. I do this to sometimes. If your elbow is not over the cue and is shifted closer to your body when draw the cue back for your final stroke it may cause you to pull it in. I think the reason this happens is that the final stroke usually is pulled back a little further than the practice strokes. Try moving your elbow out (away from your body) a little on your practice strokes this may straighten it out.

stroke ...

Just goes to show you, that what you think about yourself and what
others think are 2 different things .... That's why you have someone real good and a good teacher correct your problems and not your best friend or some
level 5 shooter that thinks he is a player ...

The best of athletes still have their coaches and mentors, and yes, the athletes are probably better in the sport than their mentors, but not smarter about it.

Hully Gully strokes, mostly by young 20's guys, trying to impress someone by looking cool, just don't realize that the best way to impress someone is by being good at Pool and being smart about it too. They try to look cool by being obsessed with jump shots or masse's when they can not run 5 balls in a row and figuring out how to play even the simpliest of shape. After watching some people play Pool, I can not for the life of me figure out how they ever get through life with all the problems that it has. Even the simpliest of problem solving skills seems to elude them.

Some of the old adages still hold true today - KISS method, you don't attempt complex things until you master the simple things, the shortest route between 2 points is a straight line, there is a wrong way and a right way to do things, and others too numerous to mention. I would say that someone should not try to master a sport until they can master simple straightforward logic.

As I have stated before, to put your mind in the right framework for Pool and how you should approach it, read

The Art of War, by Sun Tzu every competitive contest is a war of sorts.
They are just conducted on different playing fields.

This is one reason I dont like to see the cue taken back too quickly. The backstroke plays more of a roll in the stroke than just getting the cue back so it can be pulled forward.

Your practice strokes are to rehearse the backstroke. St.

LOL, I know the percentage does not add up, It was just an example. Basically I was having a problem with a few shots, and My percentage on kick shots were not so good when I had no choice but to play one.

What I Think I figured out was my backstroke was'nt as straight as it could be, and My tip must have been moving around on the CB. I concentrated on It, and It seemed to help. I'll see how well It works Out. This improved My banks, and several other shots as well.

Another area that a simular situation took place, was overextending on long shots. I was having the same problem with tip moving right before contact with the CB.

These problems were making Me a mad man, even as simple as they were to solve. I knew I was seing the shots correct, and sometimes the problem went away on It's own, just a flaw in my stroke I guess.

I am no runnout king, But I do break & run a few times a night when I play, and can make more then 5 balls on a regular basis. I can complete runs, but I do sometimes get hung up on one ball at the end of the run to stop me from going out when I do have problems, so I do need work still, to get My game back where I would like. Ofcoarse sometimes I have to also play things out until the run opens up, If the setup is really bad.

I have been trying to get back where I was before laying off from pool for a while. Something I have had to do several times in the past. Hopefully I'll be back stringing a few runs together before long. I am starting to get a taste of it again, but My consistency on It is still down, so I am working on everything that Has caused Me problems in the past. I am also starting to make the runs work out By getting the breakouts when I need.

I am trying not to overthink everything so It does'nt lead to burnnout, Been there done that, but at some point I need to start focus on these hangups, and get them behind Me.

I just started playing league again to help with My focus. We have alot of sevens here now that were not in the league when we won our last local championship, so there is some decent competition, and that should force me to focus on some of My issues alittle more. My first match was against a 6, and I think I only took that one at 4 to 1, so still need some work :D .

I realize quite a few people here can problably string many racks together, and are very good, Altough those people most likely would not get me in a money game, I still always like to shoot against better then myself, as It makes me focus more and step up, so If any of you are ever going to make It oldest city, and would like to just roll a few around for fun, let me know, would love the comp.

Good Luck to all, and may the pool gods be with ya.
Greg
