I read so many threads here on whether of not gambling is good for pool. There are good arguments for both sides of this issue and I honestly don't know.
Curlyscues posted a thread on old books http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=103283 and I was looking through them and found this article about a handicapped tourney in 1867 where they were giving betting odds on the matches.
Gambling on billiards seems to have always been a part of the game for all these years and for how many years before that and has survived. Whether or not billiards could have become more popular without the gambling we will never know.
To the historians out there, are there any references to earlier stories on gambling.
