This one was just too good not to post on the forum. The one thing that I never expected to happen in a bar, is to be challenged by a 12-13 year old kid.
I was at a regular bar that I hang out at. It was about 10pm, it was my table...and to my surprise, a young lad puts his money in the table--racks the balls--and asks me, "What are you playing for?".
I could see that the kids dad was lingering close by...but he was being real inconspicuous...not really looking at me or the table directly. The first thing I thought, was that there is no way I'm taking any money off this kid. So I tell him that I'm just playing for the table (which I had been previously anyway).
Turns out that I broke and ran out on the kid. The kid didn't seem mad or phased at all. He actually says that he liked the shot when I banked the cue off a rail and then made my ball. I then tell the kid to go ahead and clean his balls off the table (I purposely did this so that I could see how the kid hits the balls and if he was actually any good).
Sure enough, the kid casually steps up to the table and starts to fire his balls in without thinking twice. Then the dad calls him over and stops him from shooting the rest of his balls in. What appeared to be going on is that the kid must have been somewhat of a ringer...the dad brings him in a bar to make a few bucks from the regular bar patrons--that likely had a few drinks under their belt by 10pm.
The kid and his dad didn't leave and put more money up on the table--but there were quite of few other people ahead of him so even though I kept the table for another 3-4 games until I left...I never actually got to play the kid again. I'm going there tonight again and am going to ask around to see if anyone knew who that kid and his dad were and what their story is....
I hesitate to ask if this has happened to anyone else...because I just can't imagine that too many fathers are bringing their young pool playing kids into bars to play for money...
