Getting back my game...how long's it take?

General question...After taking three years off, how long will it take to get my game back to where it was?

Started playing again almost three months ago, approximately 15 hours per week. My original guess when I started playing again was that it would take six months to a year.

Can anyone speak from experience? This was the first time I've taken a break this long, so I'm in unknown territory.

I think it depends on how you understand your strokes. If it's merely a case of your mind willing to do things but your body just would not, I think two weeks tops. For a competition, add another two weeks of money games.

WHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAA?!?!?!?

You say four weeks tops, and I'll be back to my top form? I just don't see it. Three years, I didn't pick up a stick, and within a month, I'll get back my eyes, stroke, touch, feel??? Maybe you, but not me.

I don't ever think you ever really get it back. You have to re-train you're body and mind to the current conditions they are in now. I believe you retain a large amount of knowledge of the game, but starting back after a long break in playing goes back to natural ability.

I quit playing for about 10 years and during that time I never even hit 1 ball. When I first started casually playing again I had retained enough to still beat most people I came accross. The big thing that I realized about my play was that I didn't have the "drive" to play that I did before. Getting that back is the hardest thing to do. I got discouraged and only played a few times per month for a year and a half because it wasn't as easy to get it back as I thought it would be. So about 2 months ago I decided to to do something I never had to do and that was actually practice hard. I have been playing 2 - 5 hours a day for the last 6 weeks and running 2 out of 5 racks of 9-ball from the snap consistantly now. The most I've put together was 4 racks(a few times). I still have quite a distance left to get even with where I was and found that the only thing I need to beat is my own mindset now. If you put 200% in, you may get 100% back. But it all hinges on how bad you want it and what you are willing to do to get it. It is harder to regain something that you lost than to start with nothing where everything you do is a gain.

Don't get disapointed with where you are at now. Set a goal and don't worry about time. You will know when it is starting to come together and I hope that feeling makes you just want more.

Good Luck :)

I think four weeks is enough time. But then again, you could play the rest of your life and never be back to your former shelf, although I doubt it.

It’s probably more important how you use the 15 hours a week. Devoting two to three hours a day on focused practice will pay off better than banging around balls two times a week.

The first thing you do is try to remember all of your fundamentals. Once you start shooting straight again, you can work on your touch. If you find yourself having a hard time getting proper fundamentals, try video-taping yourself taking shots. Set up the camera, and keep shooting a shot till you miss it a few times. Do the same thing again, but record from another angle. This should help you. It is also a good idea to record yourself from behind and have the camera zoomed-in on what your gripping hand does when you execute your shot.

If you practice for 10 hours out of the 15, in 12 weeks you will be shooting confidently again. Another month shooting with good players and you will be sharp.

If you dont practice,ie playing the same shots over and over again, it could take 3 years.
