Since no one has started I guess I will:

Tues nite, players meeting and brackets drawn,

Not much except McAnnich and Durbin playing 9-ball Banks, still playing when I left and game looked close.

Keith and Grady (who else) playing scotch doubles 9-ball getting the 7 from Basavich and Santos.....Keith and Grady lost 2 races to 9 (9-7, 9-6) at 3 dollars a man per set. I lost a sweat bet on them, hey I still like the game.

The King took Ryan McCreesh back to Oak Park,Mi (Detroit, only an hour away) and won 7,8 or 9 games (depending on who you talked to) playing one-pocket getting 10-7 for a nickle a game.

Looks like a decent field and should be all top players at the end and the BIG thing this year is Toledo passed a no-smoking in public places law, so everyone has to go outside (not the hallway) to lite up (getting pretty popular everywhere) and that might make a difference with some people in their matches.

Don't know if I'll go everyday but I'll post what I know and find out AND before anyone complains, its all penny ante stuff that anyone can find out being there anyway, so no one will be knocking on anyones door, and if they did I'll just say I'm making it all up, ok. Later

I just came back from Glass City. Went in for the night to attend the VIP party. Some of the players were already in. Earl, Johnny, Grady, Nick and Buddy Hall did a trick demonstration for the croud of about 150. Diana Hoppe was ther taking pictures of everything. I would look for her photo gallery here on AZ by this evening sometime.

Looks like its going to be a great success and I wish them all well.

Steve,

Thanks for the updates and keep them coming.

Dave

P.S. How is Keith hitting em?

Wed nite:

Nothing happening other than tournament all day. Matches were finished around 12:30.

Only thing for sure when we left, Alice Rim was going to play 16 year old Pam Treadway (Mi) sets of 9-ball. Nothing big and Pam probly has the best of it.

Nobody was woofing at anybody, just checking everybody out since all the good players have their 1st matches Thurs. If anything happened after we left I'll tell you all tomorrow.

I'll let you know who's hittin em good and who looks a little weak then. Later

Thur noon:

I didn't even think of explaining the set-up they have for the tournament till now.....so here it is.

They have a ball room at the hotel that's about 120' x 60'. There's room for the 8 tables they have and the seating is ringed around them. A little tight to walk around the room but plenty of room around the tables like there should be.

At the other end of the room from where you enter, you walk up some stairs and the vendor area is there. That's pretty much it.

There's no other room and those are the only tables so if anyone matches up it has to be after the tournament is done for the nite (12:30-1am) or down the street about a mile to the pool room. The tournament matches are scheduled at 11am and 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11pm so it doesn't leave alot of time to do much at the hotel.

Back later on tonite

Thurs nite:

Starting with the tournament, the players that look strong right now in my opinion, are Gabe Owen, Tommy Kennedy, Johnny Archer, John Brumback, Eric Durbin, Jimmy Wetch and last but not least Earl Strickland (he's still nuts though, he thinks he's won this tournament before and I can't get ANYONE to bet me he hasn't....including him. I said he won about all the ones in Dayton but never this, they all say I'm wrong but they still won't bet a stamp) and if I want one person to win, it would be Earl cause even though he's a nutcase I still like him.

The losers side needs to be thinned out a little before I can give any guesses but with the calcutta coming I do have an idea who I'll be trying to buy (there are a couple of steals maybe).

On the action front, Alice Rim did beat Pam Treadway the one set they played 11-9 and my fellow Detroiters are a little peeved at me for picking Pam (they think I insulted and belittled Alice in the 2nd previous post because I didn't pick her???) but that's ok because they're all Eastsiders anyway. Plus I like people getting a little hot at me, makes them do the wrong thing (shhhhh).

Ronnie Wiseman.............always gettin something going. He played Chris Bartram ONE game of 9-ball for a nickle to try and get something going and loses. They still won't match up with him so he convinces them to play one MORE for a nickle and loses that one too. He's stuck a thousand and they won't bust a grape. Somehow he gets Chris to flip a coin for 500 and wins it. Still nobody biting on playing so he throws 10 balls out on the table and tells Chris he'll give him his choice to shoot and run out for 500 or Chris can let Ronnie shoot to run out. Well naturally Chris isn't going to try (balls are tied up) so he tells Ronnie to shoot and of course he gets out and gets even. Ronnie can't get them to do anything after that.

Guys are starting to try and match up with somebody now but as of the time we left, nothing. Friday, when more people are knocked out and hot about it, is when something will happen.

Talk to you tomorrow

Hey Steve, This is Marv from Detroit. Great posts! Keep 'em comin'.

Go Michigan!

Fri nite:

Sorry but it's 3am and we have to leave at noon to go back, my driver is doing ok in the tournament (Al Naif) and I need to get some sleep so i can't post much. He'll be pissed if I'm not ready, but I'm his mental coach (trust me, he needs one) so he WILL wait.

I haven't seen Allen Hopkins in about 15 years and he was hanging around the bar and we talked for about an hour, he wants to get a 3rd tournament going somewhere and he's going to be producing poker tournaments on ESPN. He always was one of the sharpest one's around.

Wish I could post more right now but I'm beat, tomorrow alot I promise, I'll try to find a PC there I can borrow.

The APA players have arrived, and the place is swarming with people playing pool in the Atrium where they have a bunch of bar boxes set up.

There is one bar table set up in the lobby, and in the evenings, a pro player spends an hour at the table available for anyone to challenge for five bucks. The money goes to charity, and the spectators really enjoy talking to the likes of Johnny Archer, Corey Deuel, who is hitting the balls pretty sporty, Grady Mathews, Nick Varner, Buddy Hall, Keith McCready, Dee Adkins, and a whole slew of others.

The pro event definitely has a strong field. Johnny Archer looks like he is in the best spot on the charts and has a good shot a winning the whole thing (IMO).

Right before Tom Kennedy's match with Earl, some local TV folks came and filmed him doing some INCREDIBLE trick shots. Tommy really put on a good show with a ball juggling trick that I had never seen, juggling a rack of balls on the table with a rhythmic motion. It was mind-boggling to see, and it brought the house down. Every seat in the place was filled last evening.

Pam Threadway, the 16-year-old player in the pro event, played well in the tourney. One match, she was down 6 to zip and came back to win the match. She stays very focused and shows a lot of promise in future events. Very smooth stroke.

The no-smoking policy here in Toledo is a new phenomenon for some tournament goers, and it's mighty cold outside. Some of the players who smoke will take a break in the middle of their match to go outside to puff and aren't liking it, but, hey, what can you do. Looks like a lot of States and communities are moving towards a no-smoking policy.

This is a great tournament. It looks like a huge success. The staff is always available, and they really have things running smoothly (IMO). Can't wait for today to start with the morning matches.

Monday moaning:

Wish I had something other than the tournament to write about but nothing ever really took place, like I said with only 8 tables there and the pool room down the street I guess it was just too hard to do anything.

We took off Sat nite before 10pm and Ronnie drove back down at 1am and turned right around and came back....the well was just dry.

I can tell you I'm going to Oak Park to meet Durbin now so he can match up with the King, always action with him if anyone wants...just tough to get the cash.

Speaking of cash....John Cash from the National Billiard News brought me a paper from 1993 where Earl Strickland WON the Glass City Open that year..............jeez, I started reading it and remembered that tournament. Think I didn't escape the bet I was talking about earlier? So I owe Earl an apology, sorry Earl and since I saved some money cause everyone had an olive in their throat and wouldn't bet I owe you dinner sometime.

They WILL change the results on their web site to include you, they just didn't remember that one either.

Done with this thread now, thanks for all the compliments from everyone, wish more would have happened but thats how it goes sometimes. I will be posting some sad news I've known about for awhile and didn't want to put up yet, I'll have it on later today.

Thanks again,
Steve
