God bless side pockets

Does that sound right? I don't know. Seems to me it would be very shot dependent.

Yes, I know what Bert says. I forget the actual quote, but essentially 'side pockets of for fools'. Or something like that. There is someone on here that always quotes him, so I'm sure they will jump right in here and tell us the exact quote.

Then there is the other school of thought. 'Don't pass your pocket'.

I think the issue is: (Taking for granted that the object ball and cue ball are positioned the both the side and corner are available and the object ball is closer to the side pocket than the corner pocket.) The farther away you get from a pocket, the smaller margin of error you have. However, the more angle you have on the side pocket, the smaller the margin of error is there. Just a judgment call. 'On this particular shot, which do I have a greater margin of error, side or corner'?

So why did I say 'God bless side pockets'? Well, I very rarely rattle out of a side pocket. I do it to often in corner pockets. Maybe it is because I know not to shoot a side pocket with the speed I might shoot a corner shot. Maybe it is because I naturally don't shoot as many side shots as corner shots, so the number of rattles are less.

If there is a choice between a soft side shot and a firm corner shot, I'm taking the side shot. If both had to be firm or both had to be soft, I'll take the corner shot.

I do know that my chances of making a cross table bank are better into the side than into the corner.

This has been a grain of salt thread. So if you are new to pool, don't bet much money on anything I've just said.
