going from slower to faster cloth

I have a friend setting up a gold crown 9ftr for me, but after paying for the table I can't afford simonis or a faster cloth. He has a slower cloth he will put on included in the price. My question is will practicing on a slower cloth be harmful when it comes time to play on faster tables.

Don't do it. Everyone I know with who has a home table and compromised on the cloth was very unhappy. Find a way to buy Simonis 860 --- even if you have to wait a bit. It's worth it.

Man, don't do it.
As Fran has said, save your money and get the best.
You will regret it if you don't.

Hang in there:smile:

Recently played a 9 ball tournament on Gold Crowns with slower cloth than I am used to. Really couldn't adjust and play my game. Maybe it's my short coming. Getting shape was pretty much an educated guess as I couldn't trust my stroke on the slower table. Hold out for the right stuff.

Table cloth

If you cannot get the best cloth you are wanting (hold out if you can) There is a way to adjust from slower cloth to fast cloth.

Learn speed drills for how a table rolls. Also known as speed zones.

Learn what a 1-10 speed is on your table.

Then when you go to a different table the speed zones are still the same parameters you just have to hit the cue ball at a slower speed then for your table.

Most shots can be executed with a 3-5 speed, so you arrive at the table you are going to play on take 10 minutes and do some speed drills to find the "Sweet spot (3-5)" and adjust your play to the table you are on.

It takes a little time to master but it pays huge in the end.

Put the cue ball on the head spot hit the cue ball with 1 tip high.

1 speed is down to the bottom rail and back to the head rail. As long as it lands in the area of the first diamond before or after contact with the head rail is a 1 speed.

2 speed is from the 1st diamond to the 3rd diamond after contact of the head rail.

3 speed is from the 3rd diamond to the 5th diamond.

4 speed is from the 5th diamond to the 7th diamond.

5 speed is from the 7th diamond to the foot rail back to the 7th diamond.

6 speed is from the 7th diamond to the 5th diamond.

7 speed is from the 5th diamond to the 3rd diamond.

8 speed is from the 3rd diamond to the 1st diamond.

9 speed is from the 1st diamond to the 1st diamond. (like a 1 speed)

10 speed is from the 1st diamond to the 3rd diamond and so on.

You do learn to adjust the more you flick between the two types of cloth. Neither fast or slow cloth will ruin your game.

As a kid I played on very slow snooker tables and they actually helped me improve my cue accuracy on harder struck shots.... Because they came up so damn often.

That said I would definitely hold out for Simonis 860. It's quality cloth and makes playing on it a lot more enjoyable. If you normally compete in Simonis then it makes sense to save for it.

860 not the fastest but a very good choice

Don't do it. Everyone I know with who has a home table and compromised on the cloth was very unhappy. Find a way to buy Simonis 860 --- even if you have to wait a bit. It's worth it.

Interestingly I have Simonis 860 cloth and play a statewide tournament on 760 Simonis and have trouble adjusting. The 860 is 90% wool 10% nylon. The 760 is 70% wool and 30% nylon. The 760 is much faster the the 860.

The 860 cloth (according to simoniscloth.com and others)
Initially developed for 9-Ball.
Slightly slower than the #760 Blend.
Combed worsted wool, high thread count and higher wool content assure long lasting wear and reduced ball burning.

"Slightly slower" was written by a marketing person. When you are looking for shape in the side and end up with shape for the corner and all the onlookers having a good laugh it seems a LOT faster.

I am glad I chose the 860 cloth because it seems to be about medium speed of all the tables I play on. This makes it a smaller adjustment to go to a faster cloth as well as a smaller adjustment to go to a slower cloth.

Finally the installation effects the speed. Cloth stretched very tight is faster than the same cloth which has loosened up with a lot of play over time. I have played on some very fast bar tables with fuzzy wool cloth, which left me scratching my head.
